Mentioned Relea
To be honest, Leaton hadn't expected to see the healer at his door.
He had hoped Reven might come see him and let him know about a match
for his sister who no longer resided with him. That had irked him,
but of course Leaton wasn't going to argue with the holder. Still, he
supposed the brother might have some news and Reven was just
unavailable.
"Ah, Healer Coran." Leaton invited him him and closed the door.
"What brings you here?"
It had taken much thought and inward reflection for Coran to reach
this decision. He still struggled with the thought that he would never
feel for Relea what he felt for Alyei. Yet, with the furtherance of
the rumors around the hold that were tarnishing Relea's reputation,
and with the feelings that Coran was beginning to develop for the
woman, he felt it only right that he should approach her brother about
courting her openly.
"Leaton," he greeted the man politely, and got straight to the point,
"it's about Relea."
Leaton arched an eyebrow, but motioned for the healer to sit. "Is
that so? Please, sit. Can I offer you some klah?"
"No thank you, this won't take long, I think." Coran said, seating
himself, "Even though Relea no longer lives with you I still felt it
necessary to come ask your blessing to court her."
"I see you get right to the point." Leaton's lips twisted into a
smirk. "You wish to court her?" The brother of the holder. If
something happened to Reven before he had children, then Coran would
inherit. "I suppose I have nothing against that though I am still
looking for a match for Relea."
Coran's lips twitched upward, "I am generally rather direct." He
agreed, before continuing, "I believe that you went to Reven asking
him to help you find a match for Relea, and in turn, he came to me,
feeling that I would be best. I happen to agree with my brother on
that matter. As a healer I can understand Relea and her condition much
better than anyone else."
"I see." And of course, it had its advantages. Leaton rubbed his
chin and eyed the healer. "I suppose I can't really say no. It's not
as if she's garnered much interest elsewhere, though I did have one
holder...well...he probably won't be interested in her either."
A surge of anger lit through Coran at the way Leaton spoke of Relea as
if she were a possession. No wonder Reven had taken up the
responsibility of seeing that she find a suitable husband. "Are you
not bothered by the rumors that are circulating about her?"
"Rumours?" Leaton looked up sharply, the corners of his mouth turned
down and he stiffened. "What rumours?"
Coran's eyes narrowed, "Surely you have heard? Rumors are spreading
like wildfire that Relea is Reven's mistress and pregnant with his
child!" Which, of course, he refused to believe, not because he had
such a strong trust in his brother, but because he did not doubt
Relea's integrity and honor.
His expression darkened as his eyes narrowed. "When did this start?"
"It's been going around for a while now," Coran could barely disguise
the disdain in his voice, "although the bit about being pregnant was
just tacked on while she was suffering from a stomach illness."
Leaton let out a growl. "This has got to stop. She's not, of course.
My sister and I may have our difference, but she's not a loose woman,
that I know." He sniffed with his own version of disdain.
It was Coran's turn to narrow his eyes again, "Of course she isn't!
And regardless, my marriage to her would sufficiently put an end to
such rumors."
"Well, you have my answer. I have to get back to some paperwork. I
do thank you for stopping by." Leaton inclined his head slightly.
"Please let me know if you hear any more of these rumours as well.
Relea hasn't told me anything."
**Why would she?** Coran thought darkly, although his face gave away
nothing as he stood, "Of course, and thank you for your time, Leaton."
Inclining his toward the man, Coran left, reminding himself every step
of the way that he was doing this for Relea. The thought of being
related to Leaton wasn't thrilling, but he would do it for her.
