Cinale

Cinale

Daigoro leaned wearily against the door jam. "Cinale, I know this may be a bit... unusual, but may I come in for a moment?"

Cinale had been expecting one of her kitchen girls, so she had said "Come in" without a second thought when she'd heard the knock. Now, as she stared at him standing in the doorway to her room, she wished she _had_
given a second thought. Her hair was partly undone, and her shoes were off, but thank Faranth she'd had the sense enough to throw on a shawl over her shoulders.

She smiled at him and sat down in one of her chairs. "Sure you can, hon.
Come here."

"Thank you. I didn't mean to disturb you, but..." he sank down into the chair with a sigh. "I would like to talk to you about Journeyman Jio."

A brow moved slightly. "What about him?"

The Hallsecond's brows grew together. "Well, it seems that Miryene, despite my advice, is determined to marry him."

Cinale stared at him. "She said _what_?"

"She said that she's determined to marry _Jio_." Daigoro could hardly believe it either.

"But, hon... Has her marriage to Jhonnel been...offically dissolved?" Shards. When did all _this_ come about?

"Not yet, but it will be soon. And as soon as it is Miryene has decided she will marry that _parasite_ Jio!" Daigoro stood and began pacing the room. He still couldn't believe it. He had thought Miryene a smarter woman than that.

Her eyes followed him. "He's not a parasite," she said quietly.

The Hallsecond didn't hear her as he was lost in his own frustration. "In a way it's almost a relief Miryene is to marry that man, for if she were to marry any other I could see him bringing true shame down on her."

Her voice raised, became sharper. "Daigoro."

"I know, I know," he finally muttered, "you like him too. But I still think that boy is dangerous and I don't want to see Miryene hurt again."

Her eyes softened. "I know you don't. And I understand..." She studied him quietly for a moment. "Come here, hon."

The Hallsecond tried to read her expression as he walked towards her, but he couldn't tell what she was thinking. What _could_ she be thinking of him walking into her room at all hours and ranting to her about one of her friends.

When he drew close enough, Cinale reached out and took his hand in hers. "I know that you're...upset." She looked up into his face. "But you're not doing Miryene any favors by acting like this," she said softly.

"But she's making a mistake, Cinale. I believe down into my bones she is rushing into this too quickly. How can I just stand by and watch this happen? No, wait, not just watch, but _participate_ in it!"

"There has to be a reason behind it, Daigoro." She paused, thinking. "But I do know this: if you force your opinion of this on her too much, she'll stop listening to you altogether."

He sighed and gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "I just want what's best for the woman is all."

"I know you do, hon." She returned the squeeze just as gently. "I know. You have a good heart, and she knows it."

Daigoro searched her eyes as he said, "Tell me Jio would never hurt her, and I'll be done with it."

"You know I can't promise that, love," she murmured softly. Couples fought. It was the way of things.

She was being less than reassuring. "Then tell me you think her marrying Jio is a good idea."

"She needs this right now. I can't say yet whether I think this is a good idea or not, Daigoro. I can't. But wouldn't you rather have them openly married than having them keep up this silent, hidden courtship? I know I would."

"That is the _only_ reason I am not fighting this. But I'm telling you, Cinale, if that boy brings shame on Miryene in any way, he will answer to _me_ for it."

She didn't reply to that. She didn't need to. Instead, Cinale gently squeezed his hand again.
