Cinale

Cinale

Up to her elbows in flour and dough, Catriana was humming softly while kneading the dough for tomorrow's bread. It was spiced with savory herbs, a compliment to the hearty stew that was being prepared on the other side of the kitchen. The scents and sounds of the room reminded her of home, a thought that she quickly pushed away for the ache it would bring if she dwelled on it too long. She missed both family and friends....and the freedom she'd had to help her father in the vinyards and cellars.....No.
She wouldn't think about that.

"How are you this evening, hon?" Cinale asked as she came over to put a few of the pots away.

"I'm well. How are you?" She shaped the dough into a round mass and set it on the baking sheet, then wiped her hands carefully on the towel she'd set aside for just that purpose.

"I'm doing just fine." The cook pushed the last pot into place in the upper cabinet, then turned to smile at the girl. "I wanted to thank you for helping me finish up in here. Maybe I can actually go to bed at a timely candlemark tonight!"

"I'm happy to help, Cinale." Catriana smiled back at her.

"I hear that Daigoro is entrusting a flit egg into your care, Cat."

Catriana twisted the towel nervously in her hands. "Yes...he is. Oh, Cinale! I don't even know what to do with it. I don't know the first thing about taking care of a firelizard! I'm so afraid I'll do something wrong."

"If you'd like, I could help you, hon." The cook gave her a gentle smile.
"Fey's still pretty young, and I'm still learning a few things myself, but I'd be glad to teach you what I know."

"You would? Oh, thank you, Cinale!" For the first time since Daigoro told her about the egg, Catriana felt the nervous worry begin to fall away.

"You're welcome," she smiled. "And I'm sure Daigoro will give you a few pointers as well. He's had his bronze for a long time."

"So what do I do? How long do they take to Hatch? How will I know it's going to? What if I'm not there?" A flurry of questions arose.

Cinale grinned. "Easy, hon! One thing at a time, hmm?" She could hardly blame Catriana for feeling the way she was. After all, Cinale had had those same feelings running through her before Fey hatched! "After the flit lays her eggs, they take about a month to harden. Then they'll hatch. You have to keep the egg in a pail of hot sand to keep the baby inside alive." She smiled at her. "No doubt Daigoro will explain this in more detail when he gives the egg to you."

Catriana blushed. "Of course. Of course he will. I am just so afriad I'll do something wrong."

"You worry too much, hon. You'll do just fine. And remember I'm here to help you."

"Thank you, Cinale. Thank you so very much."
