N'vanik

N'vanik

Kenza reflected as she waited for N'vanik to answer the door to his weyr that U'kaiah certainly got the bad side of the bargain being Wingleader. She expected a certain level of behavior from him, and had demanded it without much sympathy. N'vanik, on the other hand, was about to get a far different sort of talking to--and he was getting her standard bribe she brought to any rider she wanted to charm: goodies from the Baker Hall.

For a change, N'vanik got up to answer the door instead of just yelling to see who it was. He was surprised to see the Wingthird there, and with . . . treats? "Hi." He said uncertainly.

"Hi," she replied, smiling. "I've got a friend at the Baker Hall who gives me fresh sweets for my sweet tooth. Sometimes I share them with riders, and since I haven't sat down and gotten to know you yet, you're the winner of today's stash." Her grin turned mischevious. "Now that I'm old and ugly, I find men more willing to talk to me if I bring food, so be a nice lad and show me a seat before my joints get so bad I can't stand up anymore."

He opened the door wider and stood aside. "Sit where you like." N'vanik wasn't one to pass up sweets, especially ones that came from Baker Hall.

Kenza dropped her offering on a table before sprawling out in what looked like a comfortable chair, stretching her legs out in front of her. "Have a look in the basket... I don't even know what he put in there this time. Probably plenty of fruit tarts, since he knows I can't resist them."

The bronzerider located one of his favorites and took a bite. It was very good, and still fresh. "So you came here for a chat? Any subject in particular?" As usual, he was suspicious since she was an authority figure.

"Anything you want to talk about," Kenza replied, leaning forward to snag a fruit tart. "How are you settling in here?"

"Does everybody have to ask me that?" He complained. "Fine, I guess." There was U'kaiah to deal with, but there was also Traelyn.

"What else are we supposed to ask first?" Kenza replied in an amused tone of voice. "It's a valid question, you know... I, at least, like to know if you feel comfortable in your new wing."

"It wouldn't be so bad if U'kaiah would just let me do my job." At least there hadn't been any more mindhealer suggestions.

"U'kaiah cares about all of his wingriders." Stretching her legs out again, Kenza crossed her ankles and shrugged one shoulder. "That doesn't mean he's always right, but it does mean that everything he does, he does because he means well."

N'vanik rolled his eyes. "So you're here to play peacemaker? You want me and U'kaiah to hug and be friends?" He gave her a sarcastic smile.

Kenza quirked an eyebrow. "Save your sarcasm, lad. I'm not impressed. And though I have plenty of faults, I'll have you know that a fetish for bronzeriders hugging one another is not among them."

"Well, that's a relief." He couldn't help being a little sarcastic, just because she'd told him not to be.

"I'm sure it is," she replied, pretending not to notice the sarcasm. She _had_ listened to her own advice after all. "So other than you and U'kaiah, who admitedly have some tension, are you doing all right?"

"Seems to be a different story every sevenday." He said with amusement. "But right now, yeah, I'm alright."

"Planning on being less than all right in the future?" Kenza asked with just as much amusement, leaning forward to look through her basket for another fruit tart.

"Trouble likes to follow me around." N'vanik tried to keep his tone light, but a bit of something else crept in.

Kenza tilted her head to the side and studied him for a moment. "I could ask why you think that is, but I rather get the feeling you'd rather I didn't."

"Smart woman." He grabbed a sweetroll and sat in a nearby chair.

"I'm glad we agree on _that_ at least," Kenza replied with a grin. "As long as you don't let your trouble interfere with your performance in the wing, you can dance naked on the tables in the dining cavern for all I care." Kenza's grin turned sly and she winked at him. "Some people might even appreciate the view, though as a rule I don't suggest it as a way to avoid gossip." And if there was one thing she knew N'vanik didn't need, it was more gossip about him.

N'vanik smiled at the image. "Well now I have a good idea to use if things ever get dull around here." Then he turned serious. "Even if it seems I'm not good for anything else, I'm serious about Fall. Don't worry about that."

"That's all I want to hear." Brushing a few crumbs from her legs with one hand, Kenza stood. "I'll leave the sweets with you. Consider it my welcome gift. Just don't eat them all by yourself... I don't want to hear you've got a sore stomach tomorrow, because I'll have no pity."

"I'll find someone to share it with." He said.

Kenza smiled, and started toward his door. "Good. Have a good evening, N'vanik."

"I will."
