Daigoro sighed as he set a mug of klah laced with a little of Master Shanastin's special liquor in front of Cinale. "I have been to more cheerful weddings. Though I have to admit, it was a bit more cheerful that her last."
A half-smile curved her lips at that. "I'd have to agree with you there,"
she murmured before taking a drink of his brew. She winced slightly as the small amount of alcohol burned down her throat.
"I can tell you, that's not the way I want to be married," he said as he slid into the seat across from her. "I want dancing at my wedding."
"So do I. _Lots_ of dancing. We don't get to do it often enough here at Vintner Hall."
The Hallmaster smiled at her over the rim of his mug as he pictured her dancing, in the Spring, with a wreath of spring flowers in her hair. All done up in Gather finery, with the sun hitting her golden hair just so.
"What else do you want at your wedding, Cinale?"
"Mmm..." She paused thoughtfully, the look in her eyes growing distant.
"Well, I know I want it to be a crisp, sunny day. No rain, please!"
she grinned, looking up to meet his eyes...and the expression in them warmed her.
"Though a few cheery clouds in the sky are always a nice backdrop," he smiled. "It makes the sky so much bluer, I think."
"That's true... But you wouldn't want rain, would you, hon?"
"Of course not! _Cheery_ clouds, love, not _rain_ clouds," he chuckled as he turned the warm mug in his hands. "What else do you want?"
"A feast that I don't have to cook." Cinale's blue eyes glinted as she took another sip of her liquor-laced klah.
"One that hopefully turns out better than that awful fish your girls whipped up," Daigoro said with a dramatic shudder. It soon faded into a soft smile. "And family and friends around?"
"Of course," she replied, smiling gently at him. As she searched his face, the need to be closer to him suddenly snuck up on her, and Cinale found herself longing for something she wasn't sure if he wanted to give. The feeling shocked her, for she hadn't felt it so strongly before now.
"I couldn't be married without my lads around, and maybe my family could come." His mind played the scene perfectly. He and his mates raising a beer to his lovely new bride, his father and sister, his niece and nephew smiling near by. But the faces were all in the background, save Cinale's, smiling up at him with that beautiful, sweet smile that seemed to make his heart melt. She would not be the youngest bride, but what did it matter? He wouldn't be the youngest groom. He wouldn't trade such a woman for a girl any day.
"'Maybe' they should go to your wedding? Of course they should go!" A small grin teased at the corners of her lips. "What else do you imagine your wedding to be like, Daigoro?"
"Oh, well, you know, men aren't like you woman, who seem to be dreaming of your wedding day since they were little girls." Lately, though, Daigoro had been thinking of it more than his manly pride would want to admit. "But if I had to say, I think I would want it to be at a Gather.
That way all the family and friends, and even perfect strangers, we could all laugh and drink and dance together. There are no long faces at a Gather wedding."
She actually blushed a bit at his first words. "I've been to a few Gather weddings. You're right - there are no long faces. But with all that wine and ale flowing and all those bubbly pies to feast on, how _could_ there be any long faces?" She grinned at him, knowing his weakness for the bubblies.
"Wish Miryene could have had dancing at her wedding," Daigoro sighed. If there had, he could have asked Cinale for a dance. Spring was a long way off to wait.
She reached across the table and laid her hand on top of his. "You made the effort today, Daigoro," she told him softly. "I'm proud of you."
That brought a slight smile to his lips as he covered her hand with his other. "Well, I have to admit, the Journeyman did look like he was genuinely happy, and truly in love with her. And I think that could just be what Miryene needs more than anything right now."
"You're right. It seems to be exactly what she needs."
"Have you..." He cleared his throat and dropped his eyes, fixing them on her tiny hand almost hidden under his. "Have you thought about marrying, Cinale?"
"Of course." Her eyes flickered to his face, wishing she could see his eyes. "I've... I've thought about it more these past months than I have in all the previous Turns of my life," she admitted quietly.
"It is about time you thought about settling down, Cinale." Daigoro took his hand off hers and reached for his mug. He finished it off in one long gulp and sighed as he set the mug down. The brewer knew it was more than the liquor in the cup that gave him that warm feeling in his gut when he glanced up into her eyes. "Perhaps i'ts time I thought about it too."
