"Odi!" Derwill's voice rang through the air as he stumbled across the sand after the canine running ahead of him without a care in the world. "Come back!" But it was too late. An unsuspecting rider, bathing his green in the inner lake had drawn Odi's attention and the canine had already reached him, barking and wagging his tail playfully as he jumped around G'wen like mad.

"Is he yours?" The tiny greenrider smiled at the dog's antics as his large green all but buried her head under the water.

"Yes, yes, he is," Derwill said, panting slightly when he reached the greenrider and canine. "I'm sorry, he's just very enthusiastic." He paused for a moment, gauging G'wen's reaction. "He's very friendly, you can pet him if you like."

"He's very cute." G'wen smiled, hoping the man didn't think he was offended by the dog jumping about him. He ruffled the pup's ears before asking, "what's his name?"

"Odi," Derwill smiled, relieved to see his canine hadn't caused offense. "He just loves people, sometimes he sees someone and takes a run for it. Do you have pets?"

G'wen laughed and pointed up at Neath. "Does she count?"

}:No:{

"I think she might take offense if I said yes?" Derwill grinned. Odi was still at G'wen's feet, now sitting and pawing at him for more attention.

G'wen covered his mouth to stop another laugh from escaping. "She's quick to take offense, don't you worry. Neath, say hi to Odi." The green leaned down, the look on her face said she'd rather eat the small dog than sniff noses with him.

"And rightly so, of course," Derwill grinned. "Such a beautiful green commands respect, of course." Most of him was quite serious, he wasn't a rider so any dragon was still a thing of wonder.

"Flatter her like that and she'll be your best mate!"

"Oh, a dragon best mate, now that would be useful!" Actually, it would, Derwill realised all of a sudden, an almost forgotten experiment coming back to him suddenly. "Has she ever spoken to someone other than you?"

G'wen's smiled faded and he looked down, away, anywhere but at the man. "Maybe? No? I don't know..."

Derwill caught something in the man's eyes before he looked away, but decided to let it go, realising it would be bad manners to pry when G'wen obviously didn't want to tell him - a stranger - something. "Well, tell her I think she's wonderful," he grinned.

"Oh, she knows." G'wen patted her shoulder. "She understand us."

"Such an interesting matter, the dragon mind," Derwill said, still pondering a little. "I'm fascinated with the idea of mindspeak. Can't quite grasp what it's like."

"It's...like a crazed monologue sometimes." G'wen grinned up at Neath, half teasing. She blew out because she knew he was only half-teasing.

"Because she knows your thoughts, it's like talking to yourself?" Derwill asked, trying to understand and imagine what it would be like.

"No, not really. It's more like a conversation but it's in your thoughts and not out loud. Her 'voice' in my head is hers, not mine. Her voice is female and I can feel her emotions and--" He cut off, that same look from before coming over his face, and he bit his lower lip, almost like he didn't trust himself to speak any further.

"But if your minds are like one, can't you tell what she is going to say before she even says it?" Derwill asked curiously. It was something he had been trying to understand ever since coming to the Weyr.

"No," G'wen chuckled, "It doesn't work like that."

"Curious!" Derwill smiled, looking down at a now fidgetting Odi. "I think we'd best move on, but it was nice talking to you. I hope we meet again soon."
Neath bend over to sniff the canine, before doing the same to the older man, her nose only inches from his face.

Derwill chuckled at the sniffing dragon, looking at her in wonder. "Goodbye Neath, I hope to see you soon too."
