"Master Miranek?" Lisadi called as she entered the healers' rooms. She
had one arm around the little girl, offering comfort to her even as
the tears continued to fall down her face.

"Don't worry, dear one," Lisadi said, giving Dareera's shoulders a
squeeze. "Master Miranek will take care of it. I promise."

"Now what seems to be the problem?" The healer came out in response to his
name being called, then got down on a level with the crying child. "Do you
feel sick?"

She shook her head no and puckered her lips as she clung to Lisadi.

"Show him your finger, Ree, He can't help us if he doesn't see it."
Lisadi urged the little girl. Still clinging to her foster mother,
little Dareera held out her hand. Her one finger was red and swollen
and it was clear there was something sticking in it.

"We noticed it this morning. I'm not sure how she got the splinter,
but it was already red when I saw it. I brought her here straight
away." Lisadi explained to Miranek.

"Now that looks painful," the healer said, as he gently took the child's
hand, avoiding the sore area. "but I think I can make it go away."

Dareera looked up at him, her eyes still wet with tears as she stared
at him. "It hurts," she mumbled.

"Well how about you hop up on your foster mother's lap on this seat over by
the glows and we'll see if we can make the ouchies stop." Miranek gestured
to the seat in question and reached for a pair of tweezers in a clean bowl,
and a dressing. "You get yourself comfortable, while I clean my hands."

Lisadi moved over to the chair and motioned for Dareera to join her.
The little girl looked around anxiously and then quickly hopped into
her la.

"It will be all right dear. Master Miranek is the best there is. He'll
have you all fixed up in no time. I promise." Lisadi encouraged her
fosterchild. Dareera just buried her head in Lisadi's chest as she
waited for the healer to return.

The Healer came back after a moment. "Okay, hold out your hand here in the
light," Miranek pointed to the place.

Dareera's lower lip trembled, but she did what he asked. She shifted
so she could stare at him with wide eyes.

"Now, I want you to count to three, and when we get there, this will be
gone." Miranek lined up his tweezers, ready to grasp the splinter. "One,
two, three," he gave a gentle pull and out came the offending item.

Dareera started to count, and then she gasped as she felt her finger
burn for just a moment longer before the worst of the hurt was over.
Her eyes welled with tears.

"That still hurt," she said, sounding almost indignant.

"One moment," a tiny blob of numbweed was placed on the area. "How about
now?"

The pain instantly seemed to vanish. Dareera, mouth still puckered a
bit, looked at Miranek with curious eyes. "Better," she managed,
before turning to tuck herself back up against her foster mother.

"Dareera, you need to thank Master Miranek for his help," Lisadi
coaxed the young girl, trying to get her to look at the healer again.

Pulling away from Lisadi, Dareera paused to look at Miranek for a
moment. Then in a sudden burst of emotion she flung herself at him and
hugged him.

"It hurt and you made it better. Thank you."

"You're welcome," he told her with a smile. "Just come and see me if it
hurts you any more."

She nodded into him as she let go and then turned back to Lisadi and
grabbed her hand.

Smiling Lisadi looked up at Miranek. "Thank you again Master Miranek.
I know we will have a much better day now." She smiled down at the
little girl who had taken over her heart just as if she'd been her
own. Life was good even if some things in her life were not as she
expected.
