Gelira walked into her father's office. She didn't have the same
bouncing gait as she had before, but it was starting to be clearly
evident to all now the reason. Her hand rested on her abdomen, which
had finally made enough of a showing to garner some looks in her
direction. She still had quite a ways to go according to the healers,
but all seemed to be progressing as planned.
"Father?" She called out as she pushed open his door, "You wanted to see me."
"I did," he said as he stood up from behind his desk. "Sweetheart, I
have some news for you."
"Oh?" She inquired with a raised eyebrow as she took a seat. It always
felt better to sit these days than to stand when she didn't have to.
She was curious what her father wanted to share with her.
"Yes," he smiled. "Aughashyth had just informed me there is a gold egg
on the sand at Dragonsfall." He stopped there with his eyes fixed on
hers. If there were any time he hoped Gelira's reactions were an open
book to him, it was right now.
"Oh!" She exclaimed. Her eyes opened wide at that revelation and
thoughts began whirling in her head. Rhosyn had been talking to her
about gold eggs and things over these many months and it had allowed
Gelira to believe she could even be worthy. Her eyes drifted down to
her slightly emerging abdomen and she wondered if it would interfere
if she dared express her desires. She looked back up at her father,
her eyes showing her uncertainty, yet excitement all in one moment.
There hadn't been as many gold eggs in recent Turns. This could be a
true chance of a lifetime.
He could almost read her thoughts as if they were written across her
forehead. It had always been that way between them. He'd even known
she was pregnant before she told him. "They're calling for candidates
Gelira," he said directly. "I think you should go."
She looked at him intently, her emotions clearly evident on her face
even as she asked, "Do you really think I'm worthy of that?" She
wanted it, but to actually almost _have_ it in her grasp? _Was_ she
worthy of what was the most treasured thing on all Pern? Caring for
and loving the most amazing of all dragons?
The corner of his mouth quirked revealing a dimple. "It doesn't matter
what I think," he said. "It matters what the queen things and you
can't know if you aren't there."
She knew from his answer what he thought. Gelira broke into a grin.
"Do you think they'll let me Stand still?" She asked her hand drifting
to her abdomen. "And what do I have to do to get there? I mean do I
have to talk to Rhosyn here," she frowned for she knew Rhosyn had her
own set of ideas about pregnancy and Standing.
"Don't worry about here," he said giving her a direct look. "Aug and I
will take you and you'll be just fine," he added. "Women have
impressed while pregnant before and I'm sure the Weyrwoman at
Dragonsfall will be happy for more candidates."
Gelira couldn't help herself. She got up and moved around his desk to
hug her father.
"I love you father. Thank you for suggesting it to me. When do you
think we need to leave?" Her mind was already whirling with the things
she would need to do before they set off. She knew once a gold egg was
on the Sands they would want the candidates as soon as possible. What
if she _did_ Impress? Her home would change, everything would change.
Still, it would be so worth it. It was definitely worth the chance.
"There is no rush," he said. "It just clutched and you have plenty of
time to prepare. Just remember though you will stay there if you
Impress so pack in priority bundles and we can bring you your things
later."
Gelira nodded, already contemplating what she would need immediately
and what could wait. Then again, most likely she would be back home to
River Bluff after the hatching as though nothing had happened, but at
least it was a chance.
"I'll start working right away. I'll see if I can get some of my
friends to help." She held up her hand to stop him before he could
start. "I promise I won't do any heavy lifting." That had been one of
her requirements upon finding out she was with child.
He grinned at his grown up daughter, so very like her mother it
sometimes sent pangs through his heart. Liranet would be so very proud
of Gelira. "Remember old dad can help you too my dear."
She looked back at him and grinned. "Oh, don't worry, I haven't
forgotten. Who do you think is moving the _really_ heavy stuff," she
teased, turning to him and giving him another hug. "I'm so excited,"
she whispered as she kissed his cheek.
