Description: Thayde approaches the Hallmaster about a promotion
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 5, day 12 of Turn 7
Famell was once again back to work at his desk. His least favorite
part of the job, but it was necessary. He had just decided it was time
to take a break when he heard a knock at his door.
"Come in," he called out.
Thayde came in to the Hallmaster's office, "Afternoon, Famell, I hope
that I am not catching you at a bad time?" He had been contemplating
his position as Journeyman for a long while. Thayde didn't know anyone
else in the Hold that had the same amount of extensive training in
dolphin healing as he did. He'd spent Turns away from the Hall
furthering his training, and he felt that he was ready to be promoted.
Of course, that all came down to the Hallmaster's opinion.
"No, not at all. In fact I needed a break. Come in, sit. What can I do
for you today?" He asked.
The senior journeyman came in and sat down opposite Famell, "I wanted
to talk to you about my progress towards Mastery. I spent several
Turns at Jade Harbor studying and working on my profile.... And I
think I am ready." He knew that he was a couple of Turns younger than
some of the other senior journeymen who had not yet been promoted, but
he believed his body of work spoke for itself.
Famell looked the young man over closely. He had read much of Thayde's
work from his reports, and he had to agree that he had shown fine
progress over the Turns.
The pause drew out a few seconds longer than was customary perhaps as
he let all the words sink in.
"I have seen your reports. I know you have worked hard at your skills.
I'm most certainly not opposed to your pursuing your mastery. Not at
all, in fact. You've already done much time away from the Hall, one of
the many requirements." He paused again to let his words rest between
them.
"You know that you will need to pass the test in your area to prove
your knowledge, and you must also present a project or proposal for
improving the craft in order for you to move forward into mastery?" He
knew Thayde had been working on many things, but so far he wasn't sure
if the young man had chosen a particular project to present.
Thayde gave a nod of his head, "Yes, I understand. I've been
gathering a portfolio to go along with my proposal for a while." He
hadn't expected gaining his mastery to be easy, so he had planned as
far ahead as he could, working and gathering information so that he
would be ready when the time came.
"Alright, that is as expected," Famell replied. "Why don't we schedule
your knowledge test with a panel of masters soon while you work on
your project presentation. When do you think you would be ready to
meet with the panel for the first test?" Famell knew he had more than
enough masters to call on for the panel, but he wanted to make sure
this would fit in with their schedule as well.
"A sevenday from today?" Thayde was confident in his skills but he
would want the chance to refresh himself on some things before going
into a test for his mastery. He wouldn't take the test in front of the
panel lightly, nor would he the presentation that he had already been
working on. Most of his presentation centered on a pulley system he
had created for the dolphin infirmary. It allowed dolphins to swim in
and be lifted up for more intense healer work. Valves on either side,
that worked with hand mechanized pumps, would continue the water flow
along the dolphin's skin enough to keep them moist for the duration of
the procedure.
"A sevenday should work just fine. I'll arrange to have the other
masters here for your skill test and presentation. Normally, I have
you demonstrate your project to me beforehand. Could you be ready a
day or two in advance to show me what you have ready? That will also
give you a dry run so to speak on what to expect with the masters
panel," Famell explained to Thayde.
Thayde nodded, smiling, "That will be perfect I will have everything
ready." What he didn't say was that even before he showed his new
contraption to Famell he would probably show it to Aslvor and see what
she thought of it and if she found any problems with the idea.
**Coming to rely on her a lot aren't you?** A little voice in his mind
asked. He conveniently ignored it.
"Alright then. I'll expect to meet with you in a sevenday, and I'll
work on arranging the council of masters for shortly thereafter,"
Famell confirmed the details. "I look forward to seeing your project."
