Description: The children get caught in a hurricane and get rescued by some big dragons
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 5, day 13 of Turn 7
Notes: Coincides with 'Where are the Children?
It had been a nice day so she had ventured outside by the water to
collect driftwood. Veerona had a few older children with her since
they were gathering things that had been on Jylanya's list of
instructions as well. Unfortunately for them, they didn't know that a
hurricane was coming. As they walked further down the shoreline, the
weather started to get nasty. Looking up, she saw the eyes of the boy
who was leading their group.
"Oh no! We're too far out. We'll never get there in time." He was
older, but he was young, and he hesitated.
Vee didn't know what to do. "We need to get inside, somewhere!"
Markle, another of the children in the group, looked to others. "That
storm is coming _way_ too fast. Where can we go?" He gulped back his
own fear as he anxiously looked around where there were. There were
cliffs, but he saw no openings in any of them. "I want to go home," he
mumbled, "maybe we should just _run_ as fast as we can and _try_ and
get home?"
"We have to go now then!" Taking off as quick as she could, she
started running. Things got worse though and she stopped, trying to
see through the rain. And then the wind was blowing so hard. She
grabbed someone who was near her. She was so tired. She couldn't run
anymore. "Oh no..."
Markle joined with the others as they took off at a run. He even tried
to pick up one of the younger children, but that was too much for him.
Instead he grabbed the younger one's hand and made them run fast
alongside him. He was tiring already and the winds were whipping in
front of him, pressing against him. It almost felt as though he were
running through thick sand. He looked up and found he could barely see
the other children in front of him as the winds whipped up the sands
on the beach.
"Wait, we can't lose each other. We have to stay closer!" Markle
wasn't even sure the others could hear him.
Anxiety was starting to close in. Veerona knew something was wrong.
And there were no grownups to help her. "This way!" she shouted,
trudging towards the coastline and away from the water. She kept
shouting every so often. Then she managed to find an overhang that she
could fit under in the cliff. It was better than nothing.
Markle followed once Veerona found the overhang. It wasn't much, but
it gave them some protection. He wrapped an arm around one of the
youngest ones who'd come with them. "We're not going to make it. This
is just the beginning of the storm. We _have_ to find more shelter
than this." He tried to look out, but the wind and rain were coming
almost in sideways sheets already. It was nearly impossible to see
just a short distance in front of his face.
Due to the wind, she could barely hear him. She had her eyes shut since
sand was flying everywhere. She didn't see the blue firelizard. "Markle,
how do we...we can't even see." Veerona couldn't help it then. She cried.
All she wanted just then was Lany.
Firex was above them, looking down. The little creature was having a
hard time flying
in such hard weather so he found himself a piece of rock to latch onto with
his claws. His jeweled eyes were lidded so he could see where they could not.
A large dark shape crossed the light in their opening and blocking out
the majority of the wind. A moment later a face peered in. "Tell them
I've found them," R'enh said. "How many of you are there?"
Hearing the voice, Vee opened her eyes. At first she was too surprised
to stop crying. Then she realized it wasn't a dream. Shy, though, she
didn't speak, just staring at the man-person.
Firex relayed dutifully the information his cousin said to send. The
blue was quite pleased with himself. He had done a very good thing and
would be rewarded with many rubs and meat.
"Good," N'mor said and directed Ked to place his bulk so that he acted
as wind breaker. The wing was getting too dangerous even for the
strong bronzes, they had to act quick. "Let's get them on dragon back
and out of here," he said.
R'enh could tell they were scared and the way they were crammed under
the overhang he was going to have to pull them out one by one. He
reached for the first one and handed her to N'mor. "Here," he said and
grabbed another. Soon they had all the children loaded and he looked
up at the little firelizard. **Can you tell your cousin there we're
taking them to the Hatching Cavern then deeper inside the Weyr? That
will be the fastest way to get both the dragons and the children
safe.**
}:_That_ is not my cousin,:{ Mnoranth answered disdainfully.
**Whatever! Tell him,** R'enh answered as he swung aboard and pulled a
leather cover around the two children in front of him.
"It's going to get dark and cold but we'll be safe in a moment." He
gave the signal to N'mor and they leaped into the wind and winked
/between/.
Veerona was screaming her head off when they came out. They had been
in the middle of a storm and then they were in this cold blackness.
And then they were still in the storm again. All she wanted was her
Lany and she wasn't even home! They were at the Weyr. Her face was a
study in pitifulness. This was not what she wanted at all.
Kedvencth went /between/ almost before his feet left the ground. They
came out right next to Mnoranth. N'mor did his best to reassure the
scared children with him.
Markle was actually quite pleased. He was riding a dragon! True it
wasn't flying, but he was still on the back of a dragon! He soon
forgot about the storm in his excitement and then they were /between/
and at the Weyr. This was surely a day he wouldn't forget.
R'enh picked up the screaming girl and just held her. "Hey there," he
said softly as he slid off Mnoranth. The other child had scrambled
down into waiting arms and was already being led toward the dining
hall where many of the Weyr's residents were gathered. "You were so
brave." He patted her back like he had Zorenh's the first time he'd
taken his son /between/. "I know we have some pastries just for you,"
he added as he strode toward the dining cavern.
It wasn't exactly the best thing just then-being held by some strange man-
a dragonrider. Vee had a mistrust of dragonriders after her father had never
shown his face. All she wanted was something familiar and everything
was strange.
"Don't wanna go nowhere. I wanna go home." She stopped screaming but she
was still crying.
"I know you do," he said patiently. "But the storm is too dangerous
right now. We'll get you home when it blows over."
"Hey," popped up another girl nearby. "Who are you? I'm Kielya. Why
are you crying?"
That caught her attention but she was still unsure. "Veerona. Cause I
wanna go home."
N'mor led the children under his care to the hands of the lower cavern
women. They were safe now.
