Reven

Awareness came slowly. One by one things began to register. Pain,
incredible pain in his lower back. An ache, a dull throb in the back
of his head. Dark, blinding darkness. For one horrifying moment Reven
wasn't sure if his eyes were open or closed, and then he registered
the feel of a blindfold over his face. Relief trickled down his spine.

**Where? .... How?** Anything that his mind tried to dredge up seemed
muddled and confused. He couldn't figure out where he was, or why, nor
even how he had gotten there. What was his last memory? Reven wracked
his brain but the effort left the back of his head throbbing harder.

Deciding he would worry about the logistics later, he licked his
cracked, dried lips, "Hello?" His voice barely worked.

He strained with his ears, trying to make out the sound of someone
breathing, or perhaps someone walking around. Nothing. Was he alone?
Wiggling his toes he grunted as he tried to pull his feet apart. No
luck, they were tied securely. A jagged jolt of pain sizzled through
the muscles of his shoulders, making him even more aware of how
tightly his arms were bound behind his back.

"An' t'en she didt 'dis t'ing wi'f her mouf where.... O 'ee look, 'ee's awake."

The sounds of a door opening could be heard and then the shuffling of
feet as they entered. Reven could smell the dust that was being kicked
up by whomever was walking in and he looked up towards the voices.

"Hello?" He croaked again.

Dirt pelted him in the face, courtesy of a boot belonging to one of
his captors, "Shut up." This was a new voice, different than the one
that had been talking about the woman. Deeper in tone, this voice
seemed more cultured, more in control.

"Where am I? Who are you? What do you want?" Reven's words were
slurred together, the questions toppling over one another.

Pain exploded in his solar plexus as a heavy foot delt a kick to his
midsection. Air wheezed from his lungs as stars exploded behind his
eyes. "I said, shut up." The voice growled, "For a holder you are not
so smart, eh?"

Reven groaned as he pulled his knees up to his chest. Although the
question 'what is going on?' plagued him, he didn't ask again. Not
that he could speak as he gasped to bring air back into his lungs.

"Take him outside." Reven felt someone cut the ties around his feet.
"Watch him, make him piss in front of you, don't let him out of your
sight."

Hands grabbed his shoulders and hauled him to his feet. Reven bit down
on his lip as a tortured hiss escaped through his lips. His shoulders
were on fire, screaming from the unnatural position in which they were
bound. He wasn't given much time to orient himself or his stiff legs
before he was pushed forward. Without his arms free to steady himself
Reven felt himself falling before an explosion shattered his face.

"Dammit, now look what you've done." Ehvan cursed as he pushed his
partner aside. Their captive lay unconscious on the floor, blood
streaming from his nose and mouth where he'd fallen face first and
clipped the corner of the table.

"I canna' help 'ee's an oaf!" The shorter, darker man raised his hands.

"Just let him lay there. When he comes around we'll try again." Ehvan
waved his hand dismissively as he pulled out a worn deck of cards and
motioned for his partner to sit down, "We've probably got time for a
hand or two before he wakes up."

"Maybe 'ee won't an' will save us t'e trouble?" The shorter man
cackled as he pulled out his pipe and set down across the table from
Ehvan.

"If only we were that lucky."
