Loella cried in her mother's arms as they rolled her new husband onto
a stretcher. She could hardly see as her parents pullled her along
beside the sad burden.
Wirnan had jumped in to help carry the stretcher. It was hard to see
his friend lying so still and unresponsive, he hoped beyond hope that
Karhal would recover. Wirnan felt anger course through him at the
thought of what had happened. He would do anything in his power to
help the guards and the Hold track down the evil villain who tried to
take the life of his friend. Face set, eyes forward, he lifted his
side of the stretcher.
Even with the medicine given to him, Karhal had not responded, but the
reddened flush was beginning to fade around his ears. Another person
stepped forward, unfamiliar to many in the Hold. He was a large man,
broad through the shoulders and his hair was nearly completely white.
He was clad in the garb of a guard, but his faded hold badge was not
Amber Hills and his lined face revealed a deep set worry. Although
obviously older than many of the others who had grabbed the stretcher,
he lifted the it with surprising ease. Grey eyes stared down at Karhal
and a strong jaw twitched before he looked up at Loella. "Don't cry.
He would hate to see you in tears."
Loella nodded and tried to stifle the tears. She straightened up and
tried to see who had spoken through her tear fogged eyes. Her brows
drew together.. "W...who are you?"
Chupsin wasn't paying any attention to that. He was watching the man on
the stretcher and making sure that the chest moved. He had sent orders ahead
via Tourniquet to the man on duty to get ready. In his mind, he was running
through a list of things he needed.
The strange man looked at the others on the stretcher and at the
slender Steward. "He's a fighter, Steward. He'll make it." His voice
was firm, uncompromising. "Lets just get him to the Infirmary. I'm
sure the Lord Holder will need you." Grey eyes turned back to Loella.
"Kardein. Karhal is my son...and now you're my daughter as well." His
gaze flicked over to Chupsin, watching what he did as he hefted more
of the weight on his side.
Petriv took one of the stretcher's handles too. Karhal was large man
and they needed more than two man to carry him. He nodded at Kardein.
Loella's face crumpled again, but she nodded at the big man. She
didn't trust herself to talk but placed a soft hand on his forearm and
then turned to walk beside him toward the infirmary.
When they reached the doors, Chupsin led them inside and to a table
that had been prepared for that purpose. They would work and then get
him into a bed when he was stable. "Everyone if you can please go to the
waiting area, thank you." His journeymen and apprentices were there, ready
to assist. Tourniquet was nearby, watching.
Petriv nodded and helped to lift Karhal to the table. The he wrapped
his arms around Loella. "Let's give the healers a change to work in
peace."
"What have we got, sir?" Journeyman Stennar asked.
Kardein nodded to Petriv. "Good to see you again, Petriv." His voice
was brusque. "Just not like this." He looked down at Loella as well as
her mother and with a firm hand guided them away from the man on the
cot. "We have to let them do their work. We can't help him by being in
the way."
Loella didn't want to leave him there. He was so still and it was all
she could do to move one foot in front of the other when she tried to
think what her life would be like without him. She let Petriv guide
her from the room but she wouldn't move beyond the waiting room. "I'm
staying right here."
"All right, we're staying with you," Petriv said and offered a
comforting smile for her and her mother.
Loella looked at the faces around her grateful for their support. "Thank
you."
