He wasn't blind. He could see and he could hear and it wasn't exactly as if
it wasn't obvious. E'rae saw them. He had been going to her quarters and he
saw them. And he didn't mistake it. He didn't know what to do. Every time, he
saw that tree. He saw her face and he saw that tree.
**She doesn't want you when she can have a bronzerider, a Wingleader,
who will give her whatever she wants. He can protect her.** He spat at
the ground. Underneath that calm exterior, he was lost. And then he
felt pure rage. Pure rage at his own failure. His hands formed fists
almost without thinking about it. **She shut the door in your face
remember? You're just a bluerider. And that's all you will ever be.**
For the second time in his life, he felt ashamed. It was like seeing
his father's face as he stood there on the Hatching Grounds all
over again. He couldn't help it, could he?
He was making Leith upset, but he was almost inconsolable. So he ran a
long time, thinking on the matter. In his mind, there was only
one solution.

"K'mai...are you in there?" He walked inside the weyr, albeit slowly.
E'rae looked around and noticed things that made him remember. River
Bluff had been home for so long. That mark had been from a punch after
a raucous dragonpoker game. That scuff on the floor had been from
a wrestling match. Sighing, he tried to put all that in the back of
his brain if he was going to get through this.
"Yeah." K'mai appeared from the ledge where he'd been relaxing with
Sebeth. He saw the look on his friend's face. "Is something wrong?"
"I umm...I just wanted you to know before everyone else. In two days'
time, I'll be leaving." He had to pack his things and figure what to do about
Werenn and everything else. Luckily, he didn't have much to pack. He didn't
look happy about it, but he did look resolute.
"Leaving?" K'mai hadn't expected that at all. "Why?"
"I just...I can't look around at anything anymore without seeing and thinking
of it all. And I'm distracted when I'm flying. I need to have my head
clear again." He didn't go into the rest.
K'mai nodded. "You do what you need to. I'll miss you, but you need to
take care of yourself." E'rae wasn't the first friend who'd moved
elsewhere due to a tragedy.
"Yeah I'll miss you too. You can visit, though. I mean we have dragons."
He knew it wouldn't be the same, but at least it would be better than what
he was dealing with. If he ended up Threaded because of it, then no one would
be better off.
"Only a quick trip away," he agreed. K'mai took a deep breath.
"Oh, E'rae." He pulled the man into a hug.
Easing into the embrace, E'rae didn't move for awhile. Leaving was going to
be hard, but there it was. When it had been a long while, he pulled back some.
"You've been my best friend for so many turns. Thanks for it all. It's going to be
hard not being able to pop up to your weyr. I don't know what else to do
though."
"It's okay. If it might help you heal, then it's worth taking the
chance." His smile was tinged with sadness. "You can make some new
friends at Dolphin Cove. May I suggest green flights as a fun way to
meet people.."
"Don't want any of that just yet." Of course if Leith decided to chase, then it
was what it was. "I think I just want to fly for awhile." Getting back to the basics
was something he had had to do when he had been Scored. This felt almost the
same in many ways. "Anyway, I'm going to go and get my things together and go
have a talk with my sister." That was going to be another headache.
"Okay. If you need a friend, you know I'll always be there for you." Poor E'rae.
