Karhal

Karhal

Once they had him on the table and everyone else had left, the
healers
sprung into action. "Get a baseline so we can go from there. I've
already purged and treated
with eserine in the vein. We need to also get
him undressed and into a gown. Monitor his heart,
breathing, and nerves."
Chupsin moved around and used an instrument to roll down on the
underside of
Karhal's feet. Movement was a good sign.

Karhal's foot curled and
twitched in response as the instrument rolled
against his foot.

"Yes,
sir," Stennar spurred into action. First he started to remove
Karhal's
clothes.

That was a positive sign. While Stennar got him
ready, Chupsin then checked
his heart rate again, putting a tube to his
chest and counting. "We've got to get him
steady. Some of the
aconite powder to counteract immediately." Hopefully the sedative would calm
him
down and also assist with some of the pain.

"Right. How large
dose?" Stennar asked. He had recently received his
journeyman's knots, so
he preferred Chupsin to make the calls.

"Give him about 3 drops and
see how he responds. If it works, then good. If
not, we'll try
more." Chupsin knew that overdoing a sedative when someone was in trauma
could be
detrimental.

"Yes, sir, three drops," Stennar confirmed and
set to work fast but carefully. Rushing
caused mistakes and they couldn't
afford a one. Karhal's life hung by thread.

When it was done, Chupsin
watched him continue to monitor Karhal's pulse to see
if it would steady.
They needed to get him stable. That was key. If they lost him-it was
all
over.

"Do you have any idea how much poison he got?" Stennar
asked.

"He just drank a glass of wine. Zelanka has the glass-which has
the dregs in it-for us to examine
but it depends on how much was in there and
if it was the root or the petals." Chupsin would look
at it once he knew
Karhal would live. "His chest is steadying."

"All right. He's a big,
strong man, I hope it helps him pull through," Stennar said. He
examined
Karhal's face, hand resting on his pulse. "Still irregular pulse but
I do think it's getting stronger."

"Watch him and see if he improves. If
needed, dose him with the aconite till his pulse rate is normal.
Maybe then
he'll wake up. I wonder if it damaged any of his nervous system at all. We'll
also need a
steady fellis drip with nutrients." Moving up, Chupsin pushed up
his eyelids to see his pupils.

"Yes, sir," Stennar replied, doing as
instructed. This was more serious than a common cold or old auntie
with heart
"murmurs."

"I don't want him left alone at all for the next day.
We'll arrange the shifts accordingly. Start a tube for
his necessaries if he
doesn't come around. If he does, find me immediately." The healer had other
patients
to tend unfortunately. He waited around for another candlemark. When
it was certain Karhal was alive and
was at least stable, he left the captain
in good hands and went to inspect that wine.
