They spoke together in whispers. That was how it had always been.

"How long this time? Another candlemark?" Eneri asked as she washed the
sweat from Onala's body. There could be no trace of their infidelity on
their skin, for fear the moisture and the scent would read like brail in
her husband's hands.

"For Andalon?" She asked, running a towel over her thigh. "Perhaps, but
with two small bodies asleep in the next room..."

"Likely not," Eneri finished for her, raising her brows. She broke into a
smile, watching her lover nude before her, and reluctantly picked up
Onala's dress from the bar it hung over.

Eneri dressed her carefully, sliding the cotton over Onala's skin as though
she were made of glass. Onala grasped Eneri's hand as the technician
smoothed the dress around her waist, and placed a gentle kiss on her
knuckles.

They pressed against each other for a kiss, just as little Andol barked out
a cry from the next room. Their lips brushed and they laughed. Time was up.
Onala smoothed her dress into order and breezed into the nursery. Eneri was
quick to follow, already dressed in a green blouse and a pair of pale brown
trousers.

The sight they beheld made Eneri stifle a laugh and stopped Onala at the
door. Little Landon had apparently been playing quietly by himself for some
time, and was currently propped up on the base of the crib, swinging
Andol's dragon mobile at precarious speed above the baby's head.

"Landon! Get down!" His mother insisted, and the four turn old jumped down
with a look of sincere urgency on his face.

"We have to help the dragons save him from Thread!" He protested.

"Well, thank goodness you were here to guide them," Onala said as she
picked Andol up out of the crib.

Landon perked up as he saw Eneri in the door.
"Eneri! You're going to teach me... teach me how to work the lights, aren't
you?"

"You know how to turn on the switch," Eneri told him, raising her brows.

"You know," the four turn old protested. "How to make them together!"

"I'll tell you what, little man. If you still want to know when you turn
thirteen, you come see me then. I'll teach you how to 'make lights'."

Landon accepted her statement with a resolute frown. Onala quickly changed
the subject.

"Landon, get your brother a new outfit, would you? I'm afraid he's wet this
one straight through."

The little boy scurried across the room and Onala shook her head.

"How one little body can hold so much liquid..."

Eneri watched her change Andol from the doorway. The technician just
couldn't get past the idea of wiping poop off of little butts, but Landon
was cute enough. She knew her lover had no qualms about her son
apprenticing to the prolific Technican Craft when he came of age, but Onala
was still certain Eneri was going to lose her knots over their affair. She
had tried to console her, saying that if infidelity was an ending point for
every Craft, we would all live in a world full of drudges and guardsmen.
But, they both knew it was a real threat. More importantly, if they were
found out, Eneri was certain it would at least end her contract with Amber
Hills. It was the loss of Onala's company she feared the most. She could
never ask her to leave her marriage, and the life she had here that Eneri
could never give her...

"All better," Onala said, holding her infant son up into the air. Andol
smiled, puffing his thick, dimpled cheeks.

It turned out that their baby alarm had sounded not a moment too soon. The
front door opened and Andalon's voice rang out, "Hello sweetness!" as he
and their daughter walked into their cot.

"Hello darlings," Onala called back, arms still full of baby.

"Hello mommy!" Olanda ran over to her mother with something furry and red.

**Oh no...** Eneri though to herself.

"Wait a moment, honey," Andalon cried, running to catch up with his
daughter.

"I got to play with Quill today, mommy, and he caught a fur beast!" She
held up the mangled remains of an animal.

"Did he?" Onala asked with a forced grin.

Andalon's smile was almost painful.

"Yeah, and daddy says we can eat it for dinner, and then the tanners can
help me keep the fur!"

"Did he?" Onala repeated, glancing up at her husband.

Andalon was still smiling.

"I don't know if there's much to keep, Olanda." Her mother told her with a
frown.

"Aw," the girl frowned in turn, then spun back to Eneri with a smile. "Are
you staying for dinner, Eneri?"

"Nope," she shook her head with a smile. "I have plans tonight, love."

"Aw," Olanda frowned again.

"Khadir must have something special planned," Andalon said. There was a
slight hint of concern in his eyes. A man knew when he was being thrown
under the wagon.

**I have something special planned, anywhere but here,** Eneri though, but
just smiled.

"I truly have to get back," she said, with an apologetic incline of her
head. Or, at least, out of the war zone.

"Well, thank you for keeping my wife sane."

"Just doing my part to protect all of Pern," Eneri said and caught Onala's
eyes with a smile.

"See you later."

"Bye Eneri!" Olanda called and Landon echoed.

"Bye childen. Be good!"
