G'nir

G'nir

It had been rolling around in his mind for a long while and he decided it
was better to get it out in the open. During their usual meeting time, he
finished the discussion on drill changes and came out with it. "G'nir I need
to ask you something."

"What is it?" G'nir asked. "Ask away."

"Well I don't really know what to do exactly, but I thought you should
know." He took a breath and just came out with it. "Since Harki came back
I've found myself running into her. It just keeps happening. And then
flights and...Well I like her. However, I know it would never be proper
since she's my wingrider. She would never want to transfer so it leaves me
with a dilemma." He was a man, a man who wanted a woman, and couldn't have
her as things were.

"Do you just want to bed her or is it something more serious?" G'nir asked.
He was curious.

"Honestly I've tried to keep my mind from thinking about it being more
serious because I know my present situation prevents it from being so. If it
was just me wanting her, I wouldn't realize how funny she is..." P'nal
looked absolutely miserable. This was a first for him.

"We can always transfer to a different wing if things get awkward," G'nir
said. "Why don't you just go for it and see what happens? Maybe it doesn't
work out, maybe it does." G'nir couldn't really blame or judge P'nal since
he had himself fallen for Rorela.

"She won't transfer." That was the end of that discussion. "See what
happens? If things go south, then I have to work with a woman who hates me.
If things do work, then I will not be able to fly with her, knowing that I
can't protect her all the time, that I can't show her favoritism over the
other wingriders. I'm not saying I would, but I could. Too many problems.
There's a very good reason why we don't allow that, why U'kaiah's women are
in different wings from him." P'nal wasn't a fool. He also didn't think he
would be doing the Weyr a service by shirking his duty and resigning over a
woman either.

"I don't have a solution for you," G'nir said. "You can also keep away from
her."

"I understand that. How am I supposed to keep away from her when I see her
in drills every other day?" He didn't have a solution either. "I just...I
wanted you to be aware of it in case you notice that I do start acting
differently without making sense."

"All right, now I know," G'nir replied. To himself he thought P'nal was
making much ado about nothing.

Sighing, he brought out his notes and prepared to go over the other things
that were on the list. Somewhere in his mind, though, he wondered if he
shouldn't just tell Harki and get her take on everything. After all, if she
said she wasn't interested, his problem would be over anyway. Or would that
be playing with fire?
