Bahji tucked her feet under her as she glanced out of the window. The
rain pattered lightly on the roof and though the fireplace kept the
cot warm, she could scent the chill in the air. It was quiet in the
little cot, her mother out waiting at the docks to assist her father
when he arrived in from his sevenday long fishing outing. She had
neither the desire nor the need to wait with her. She had already
heard the whispers when she had stepped out in public. It was times
like that that her sensitive hearing was a curse. People knew she had
been at the Weyr, they immediately assumed and rightly so she had to
admit, that she was damaged goods. Her mother had tried to shield her
from the worst of the talk, but she heard it. She wrapped the blanket
around her snugly, and closed her eyes to listen to the rain.
Riding sweeps had its perks and as D'arvn flew over the Hold where
he'd brought Bahji for her recuperation he decided he could go off on
his own for a few minutes to see how she was doing. Falzeth landed a
little ways away from the house behind a screen of trees, So D'arvn
crunched across the gravel toward the house.
Burst heard and sensed them first. Appearing with a burst of cold air
overhead, the little bronze chattered at Falzeth in curiosity and then
looked down at D'arvn. There wasn't exactly welcome in the bronze's
gaze, but neither was there anger. It was just a cautious gaze as he
peered at the bluerider and gave a soft cheep of wary greeting. He
blinked /between/ before D'arvn had a chance to answer, appearing
right over Bahji's head. ~~blue dragon not bad not anger~~
Bahji's eyes opened at the image and her brows knit for a moment
before she recognized the caution from Burst. The image of the blue
dragon immediately made her tense, but the assurance that it wasn't
E'rae made her muscles ease. There was only one other blue rider that
she knew that would be coming here. "Tell him he's welcome to come in.
It's alright." Burst disappeared once again and found D'arvn easily.
This time he was far more pleasant, welcoming the bluerider with a
croon and promptly landed on his shoulder.
"Well," D'arvn laughed. "Welcome back Burst." He pulled a dried bit of
meatstick out of his pocket for the flit and headed for the door and
knocked.
Burst snatched the meatstick immediately, stuffing it into his mouth
with undisguised relish. He decided quite quickly that he liked this
man, and immediately hunkered down to stretch his neck out towards the
pocket, sniffing.
"Come in, D'arvn." Bahji turned slightly in her chair. She was
thinner, perhaps too thin for her delicate frame, her collar bones
sticking out far more than they should have. She wrapped the blanket a
little more tightly against her to ward against the chill that would
come in with the open door.
He pushed the door open and tried to close it quickly behind him. "Hey
sweetie," she didn't look well to his eyes. "How are you feeling?" He
pulled another tidbit out of his pocket for the little bronze.
Bahji rose to greet him, keeping the blanket wrapped around her as she
offered a slight smile. "Better I suppose. What brings you here?"
"Just came to see how you're doing. U'fo is worried about you. Me too."
"I'm fine." It was an automatic response, perhaps not completely
honest, but one she had been giving to both of her parents for nearly
two sevendays.
He bent close and whispered. "Liar."
Her face immediately flushed and her hands tightening on her blanket.
"Don't D'arvn. I'm doing the best I can right now."
"Hey," he kneeled down next to her. He reached out and tweaked the
blanked up a little further on the side of her neck. "I'm just
checking on you sweetie."
She took a deep breath and nodded, apology lacing her tone. "I know.
And I'm sorry, D'arvn. It..it just hasn't been easy."
"And that's why I'm here." He stroked her hair for a moment. "I
haven't told anyone where I brought you but they'll figure it out soon
enough. Just wanted you to know. Do you need anything?"
She nodded slowly and bit her lower lip. "Need anything?" She snorted
softly. "Help me stop feeling sorry for myself, maybe. I hate feeling
like this." There was a pause. "And...people look at me. I can't see
them, but I know. And I hear them sometimes, talking about me. Saying
things because I came back from the Weyr." She turned her face towards
the window. "Is...you're in K'lvin's wing, aren't you? "
"I am," he said. He was sad for her suffering but there was nothing he
could really do to help her through it.
She chewed on her lower lip. "I can't stay here, D'arvn. I'm
embarrassing my family just being here." She turned her head towards
him. "They won't say anything, but it's making it harder for them. "
Her fingers wound in her blanket. "If I was to go back to the Weyr,
could we keep it quiet?"
"Of course," he said. "U'fouinn and I have a double weyr and you
could stay in the other room if you wanted. We only use the one
bedchamber."
Her brows rose and she blinked. "Oh..I couldn't impose like that,
D'arvn. You'll need privacy, won't you? And U'fouinn may not want me
there."
His eyes unfocused for a moment as Falzeth passed the message through
Amizth. "He's perfectly fine with it Bahji, Excited even." D'arvn
assured her. "It has it's own door and everything, just shares the
living area where you and he can craft to your hearts delight. He
really is such a sweetheart "
Her shoulders visibly relaxed. She truly did miss the freedom the Weyr
gave her and being a burden on her family struck her remaining pride.
If she only had to deal with a few riders, riders she trusted...maybe
that would be okay.
She slowly nodded. "If..if you're sure that I won't be in the way."
"Not at all," D'arvn knew his smile was in his voice. "I'll take you
back there whenever you're ready to come."
Bahji felt a tear well in her eye before she hurriedly wiped it away
and inwardly stiffened her resolve. If she was going back to the Weyr,
she would make sure that no one, especially not a rider whether it be
a friend or not, would ever make her cry again. "Thank you. Can you
come for me tomorrow evening? I'll have said my goodbyes and will be
packed."
"Tomorrow then," he replied and kissed her cheek. A moment later he
was out the door and on his way back to Falzeth.
