Not Out of Words

Writers: AL, Chelle
Date Posted: 26th May 2014

Characters: Qorri, Meledei
Description: The two of them write letters to each other.
Location: Green Valley Hold
Date: month 6, day 1 of Turn 7

It was hard to find a moment to sit down and get a letter written. Still
harder to get it
off to a runner where it would eventually get taken to the Weyr. Finally,
though, Qorri
managed sometime during the evening.

My Meledei:

Are you doing well? How is everything? Are my candidates faring allright? I
find myself
with much to do here. I have to learn everyone's names and stations, as well
as what they
can do. The Holder and Lady are new to their stations here so there is not a
longstanding
arrangement. It gives me more freedom, though, which is good.

The weather isn't so hot as the Weyr. I can actually sleep in the evenings.
There are enough
people here to feed which keeps me occupied. I've also gotten to explore
some. I do regret
that there seems to be a lack of young men who are otherwise unencumbered.
Ah well.
Take care of yourself and do me proud. My duty to Elleth of course.

The letter arrived without pomp and circumstance, but it was opened by
the goldrider with a great deal of eagerness. Qorri's absence was far
too noticeable and she longed for the return of the woman who had been
as much of a mother to her as anyone else. Her eyes skimmed the letter
once, then a second time more slowly. Once finished, she took a moment
to sit and respond in kind.

Qorri,

I'm doing all right. I miss you terribly and things just aren't the
same around here without you. The candidates are doing fine thus far
but we still don't have another Headwoman. I don't know how long we'll
go without one. I'm sure you'll catch on to stations and I know you'll
do well, I just wish you were still here.

What's it like over there besides cooler? Where have you explored? As
for the young men, be careful, they aren't quite so open to that sort of
thing at holds. I don't want you to get into trouble. Unless it means you
come back here. Elleth says hello. Maybe we can visit you soon? Let me
know if that would be all right.

Sweet One:

I would be there if I could of course. Sometimes things happen in our lives
that we cannot control, though, and we are forced to change. There are lots
of trees here and forest. There are plenty of animals. I met L'cor's mother
and
I like her. She runs an Inn here. I can't explore much since the weather is
so
cold. Maybe when spring comes.

I would certainly be careful about these young ones. They are not men yet,
not
like men of a Weyr. I suppose I will leave them to their virgin wives. It
does get
ever so lonely, though. No one to dance with. A visit would be wonderful.
There
is some trouble with the Holder, though. I will let you know when things
have
settled.

Qorri,

Trouble with the hold? That's not good. I hope it's nothing serious.
Let me know as soon as I can come and I'll visit you the restday.
Are there no men at all? No one you can befriend at least? If not,
maybe that means you should come back to the Weyr. I'm sure I could
convince the Weyrleaders to give you back your job. You could at least
consider it, right?

What's L'cor's mother like? That reminds me, I should check on him. I
haven't seen much of him since he graduated. He's doing pretty well. I
was told to sort of keep an eye on him because of his relations, but
frankly, I don't think the Hold should have any right to any progeny,
but that's just me. I hate hold politics. I hope you don't have to deal
with them too much.

Goldrider Girl:

There are men but they are too old or they are married. They wouldn't be
able to keep up with me. Their bodies wouldn't stretch far enough. I doubt I
would like to be friends with them either. In a Hold, an unmarried woman
does
not befriend men without looking like a bedhopper.

I'm afraid the Weyrleaders would never give me back my position nor do I
want it as long as the current ones remain. Of course Cyradis will likely
live long and stay longer than Traelyn so I may die before that day comes.

His mother is very nice. She's intelligent and keeps a clean place.
She's also friendly. Her appearance makes it easy to see why L'cor's father
would have given her attention. I wonder, though, why it was her parents
never
disowned her when she was an unwed mother. Blood is Blood and if something
happened, the boy's children could possibly be called to inherit. So Records
must
be kept. Remember the Plague? Things like that were absolutely necessary at
that
point since in some cases there were none left.

I must needs get back to work now. Plenty to do.

Qorri

*****

Meledei sighed as she read the last letter. She'd of course write back,
but she'd wait and maybe she could have another back and forth with
Qorri. That was the nice thing about firelizards, the communication
wasn't quite instant, but it was close. She folded the parchment then
stood. She had to take care of some things herself.
