They had sent her with one of the supply trains. Qorri was comfortable
enough though she hadn't been travelling in quite a long time. As it was,
the woman wanted a bath. All the dust from the road was covering her
and changing the skin color of her face. Her things were packed securely
in one of the wagons and she was remembering just why she stayed in
during most of the day. It wasn't as hot here as Dolphin Cove, but the
sun was ever-present at the moment. Thank Faranth for the wagon top's shade.
"Wagons on the horizon, sir."
"Thanks." Reven waved off the drudge, his eyes flicking back to his
wife as they shared lunch, "Well it sounds as if our Headwoman is
almost here."
"Good to hear," Arippa smiled. She had been managing the staff herself
over the last few months and was quite happy to hear they'd acquired
such an experienced woman to take over the household.
When they came to a stop, Qorri took her time getting out. After riding for
so long, she was dirty, hot, and sore. **Wonderful. First impressions are so
important and all that.** Sighing, she brushed out her skirts, readjusted her
hair and tried to wipe her face with her kerchief.
Reven had a hand to the small of Arippa's back as he escorted his wife
outside. Their new Headwoman was just stepping out of the wagon when
they came down the steps. She was a strong, handsome woman, Reven
thought. From first Impressions Reven would say that she _looked_ like
a Headwoman.
The chill of the fall afternoon made Arippa shrug her shawl over her
shoulders as she they awaited their new Headwoman at the top of the
steps. She smiled and nodded. If anything she looked very competent.
After dealing with her appearance, Qorri left the others to their work and
strode forward. She saw the young holder and his wife and instantly remembered
that he was a new holder. She had breeding, though, at least. Putting a smile
on her face, despite the circumstances, she stopped a few steps in front of
them. "Well met Holder Reven and Lady Arippa. I am Qorri, in answer to your
message for assistance. I believe I can help you."
"Very nice to meet you Qorri," Arippa smiled. "We're very glad you
were available to come."
"And you as well." She noted how young the woman was. A new bride from what
everyone at Emerald Falls said. She had breeding though so that was
good. "This is a good sized holding I gather?" That would give Reven
an excuse to talk.
"It's one of the larger minor holds in the territory." Reven
confirmed, "Which is why we consider ourselves lucky to have you." He
felt that the size and view of Green Valley as one crested the valley
from Emerald Falls spoke for itself. Gleaming golden fields of grain
were situated to one side of the Hold and beautiful pastures for
runners was on the other.
"We have almost a thousand residents in the Hold though many are in
cots and other residences around the main Hold buildings." Pride was
evident in her voice and posture as Arippa delivered the statistics.
She was trying to learn about her husband's hold as much as she
could.
Qorri nodded. That would be different-having everyone spread out versus
all in the Weyr. "If it would be alright, I'd like to go over your expectations
and needs first. Then once I clean up and get my things sorted perhaps a tour?"
When they were talking, Qorri could eat. The journey had been long and she
was hungry.
Reven studied the dusty conditions of the woman's skirts, and the
equally tired looking men and runners that had traveled with her,
"There is no rush. Why don't you freshen up, take some time to rest
and get something to eat, and then you can join us for dinner this
evening and we'll discuss all of the details then?" He crooked a
finger at the waiting drudge that had been standing off to the side,
idly twisting her fingers in her skirt, "Varadee can show you to your
room now, and help get you settled in."
"Dinner will be in our private sitting room upstairs this evening,"
Arippa added after Reven finished. "The house is completely
electrified and plumbed and you have your own bathing room in your
quarters. I'm sure Varadee can show you anything you'd like to see
before then."
Varadee stepped forward and bowed her head to their newest resident.
"If you would like to follow me?"
That was a surprise. Dolphin Cove didn't have electricity everywhere.
Qorri found herself thinking maybe this wasn't so bad. "Sounds wonderful."
She went behind the young woman, looking forward to resting and getting
cleaned up.
