Dramile strode along the corridor, fuming in her anger and resentment, as
she had been doing the day they fired her. Too harsh and cruel towards her
staff, they had told her. Hah! What did they know of discipline.. any of
those half wit drudges didn't understand a thing unless it was beaten into
them. She was but a child, Lady or not, what did she know about people?
Rage was boiling inside her, her fingers curled to fists. At least they
hadn't demanded her to move out of Green Valley...yet. And they had already
replaced her, with someone from a Weyr. Weyr! Nothing good came from there.
A passing drudge, carrying a heavy basket, bumped into her. It made her
rage boil over. She was one of those born slow, with round face, eyes too
close to each other and slack jaw. Dramile twirled around and pushed the
poor drudge to the floor. "Idiot, dimglow! Watch where you're going!" she
screeched, and gave the woman a kick.
"Stop it now!" Qorri couldn't believe what she had just seen and the
headwoman's eyes focused on the woman before her. The solidly built
headwoman had anger in her eyes but she kept her rage in check before
finding out just who and what this woman was. She didn't know enough people
in the hold just yet. Still, she could easily issue orders and protect her
staff with her own rank no matter the situation. Stepping forward, she got
in front of the drudge and helped the woman up. "Go on and eat midday meal.
I'll get this myself." And then she turned around, facing the other woman,
all business and clearly not happy, waiting for her to explain herself
before she said anything further.
Dramile turned to look. "Oh, you. My replacement," she snarled.
"Your replacement?" Qorri had never been told about anything, she had just
been offered the position and took it. Still, if that was true and she had
the knots and this woman did not, there was probably a reason why. Acting
on instinct, she acted as if she had no idea who the woman even was. "I'm
Qorri, the headwoman here and you are?"
"I'm Dramile, I was headwoman here, until that snobby little Lady Arippa
took over," Dramile replied.
"Ah well, perhaps it's because I have more experience than you do then. Or
maybe it's because I understand that if you treat your staff better, you
get more work out of them. Either way, I doubt it's because the Lady is
snobby but rather that she isn't stupid." Qorri said all that sensibly,
never raising her tone. If the woman was like the rest of them, she'd break
eventually. "So then you're looking for work? I need a dishwasher."
"I'm not going to wash dishes," Dramile sneered. "I'm better than that,
unlike all these half wit drudges. Only decent worker around was my niece
Ciendra and dragonriders stole her."
**Entitled piece of sheeps wool, this one.** And then Qorri heard the name
and she put two and two together. "Perhaps she'll Impress someday and bring
honor on your family. After all, no one is too good to work. If you're not
of use, then you're useless. And I have no time for people like that." No,
Qorri's patience was about to run thin and she wasn't going to do anything
with this woman. Perhaps when she was hungry, she'd change her tune.
"She's probably slutting around," Dramile said with scorn.
"Now that is a lie. She was one of my candidates and a good one at that."
Her time had run out and so had her patience. "I have to work to do now, so
if you don't have anything else to complain about? No? Good day to you
then." Turning around, she headed in the other direction. "And if you touch
any of my staff again, they will report it to me. And you don't want to
make a headwoman angry." The woman should know better.
Dramile stared at her back, wondering if there was any way she could
revenge losing her position. "Thief," she murmured.
