Description: The friends catch up at the Hatching feast.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 6, day 22 of Turn 7
The energetic last dance had been fun, but now she needed a breather. Riven
snagged a cup of cool juice and a bubby pie - and how glad she was that
there were any of those left! - and headed to sit down. It was crowded, as
you'd expect for a Hatching, and she looked for a familiar face to sit by.
Nytha waved, "Over here Weyrling!" she said with a grin. "Bet you never
thought anyone would say that to you."
She smiled as she took a seat by the greenrider. "I'd given up all hope. It
sounds so good!"
"It does, doesn't it. What's she like?" asked Nytha.
"Demanding," she said after a moment. "And nervous. My family had to come
congratulate me outside of the barracks. I think she thought I'd just
disappear if I walked out of sight."
"That's nothing new, Pluserth was like that about my brother." The
greenrider paused as a thought struck her. "Perhaps you should talk to him,
seeing as how he impressed from the stands too."
"That's a good idea," she said. "It can't hurt to learn new things. Did
anything else fascinating happen, by the way? I know there were at least 2
bronzes."
"Some browns, and a good looking guy who's got himself a blue. Not that you
can do anything about that yet." Again Nytha paused. "You seen that bronzer
of yours yet? F'lin?"
"We were sitting together watching it," she said. "I hope he's still
willing to give me a dance or two."
"If he has any sense he will," Nytha said. "Or else he'll have me to deal
with."
Riven was heartened by her friend's defense. "That'll make him shape up
right quick."
"Good, he needs to know you're worth waiting for, and to be there when she
rises."
"That will be a treat. Though far off." She hadn't even had a chance to
consider that part yet. "I'm sure we'll be so busy we won't notice the time
going by."
"Until you get to that part where they tell you that you're a senior and you
have certain privileges."
"And that's always a celebration." She'd helped a few senior weyrlings in
her time.
"F'lin will be waiting for you, I'm sure."
"I hope so. And while we're gossiping, whatever happened with the brownrider
with the nice butt?"
"Oh him..." came the dismissive remark. "Turns out his butt was the only
nice thing about him."
"A jerk?" she guessed.
"Completely, his dragon won a wingmate's flight, and he upped and left her
asleep straight after. Had the nerve to be laughing about it as well."
"Rude!" She winced. "Hopefully someone else nice will show soon."
"Maybe I should let Tagrerth choose," mused Nytha. "But enough about me,
tell me more about the new girl in your life."
"So far Savith seems very nervous clingy. I'm hoping it's just that we had a
bad first few moments - her having to find me, then the trip to the
dragonhealers. I might be one of those weyrlings who's never allowed out of
the barracks."
"Maybe soon I'll get to meet her."
"Maybe by the restday we'll have free time."
"You might, if she'll let you. But what the weyrlingstaff says goes for the
moment."
She nodded. "I just hope I haven't forgotten everything."
"You'll be fine," Nytha assured her. "The best green weyrling pair this
class will see."
A little surge of ambition welled up, and she pictured herself getting
recognized by the weyrlingmasters. "I bet I'll lead a trio."
"A future wingthird," joked Nytha getting into the spirit of things.
"Absolutely. Terror of the wings."
"Once you've been /between/ there'll be nothing stopping you."
Riven knew that was a long way off, since they hadn't even started classes
yet, but it was a promising vision of the future. "We'll have to have a
picnic or party the first rest day after that."
"You bring your bronzer and I'll find me some company and that's how we'll
celebrate."
"That's a plan." She was sure they'd have a grand time.
"Just so long as you get through feeding and mucking out," teased Nita.
"Can't be any worse than things you've seen in the infirmary."
"That is definitely true. And it's different when it's your dragon -
although I guess in a few sevendays I won't be saying that. It must have
been great when Tagerth could hunt for herself."
"It was, but you'll get there."
"Thanks for believing in me." It was good to have friends.
"You'd do the same for me."
"Of course." She finished the juice and stood up. "I'm going to dance while
I can, if you don't mind."
"Enjoy!"
