"It was awful," the Hallsecond began as she finally sat down in her own
quarters. "Seeing him like that. For a moment, I thought he was gone." She
cast her mind back top how still Almonteo had seemed, as though he was
lifeless. "It was only when I checked to see if he was breathing that I
realized he was in need of real help."

Kanydrin came around his wife, placing his hands on her shoulders and
kneading softly, "I can only imagine. It is a good thing you reacted
so quickly."

She relaxed a little under his touch. "That's what the healer said., they
think he had a stroke."

The Master Printer grimaced, his thumbs working on tense muscles
between Thanja's shoulder blades, "How misfortunate. Some people never
recover fully." He had known a few elderly that had suffered strokes
and still had the paralysis to show for it.

"Tizan said he might be lucky, but that playing those pipes he loves might
never happen again. More than likely he won't be able to hold them
properly." Her face fell, "Carmora is devastated, she asked me to send for
her children, she thinks they may have to say goodbye soon."

"I am sorry, Thanja." He kissed the top of her head, inhaling her sweet
scent for a moment. "Do you think you will be allowed to be Hallmaster if he
goes?" It had been a tremendous milestone for them all when Thanja had
become Almonteo's Hallsecond because of the South's strict opinion of
females in crafting positions. Kanydrin could not be more proud of what his
wife had accomplished.

"I don't know," she thought for a moment. "I'm not sure I would want it
though."

"You would be perfect for it." Kanydrin reasoned softly. After Turns
of marriage, Kanydrin had no doubt that Thanja knew he would support
her no matter what she decided.

"Maybe, but this has brought home to me than none of us are getting
younger."

Kanydrin came around and knelt in front of her so that he could look
up into her face, "Speak for yourself, I look younger every day." He
teased light-heartedly, hoping to cheer his wife a bit as he reached
up and gently touched her face, "We are strong and healthy, Thanja.
Let's not borrow trouble yet."

"I wonder if," she paused for a moment to take his hand, and gently raise
him to sit next to her. "I wonder if we should go back North, I want to see
my mother again, while I can."

"To visit her? Or to stay?" Kanydrin asked.

"Yes, no, I don't know," the normally decisive Hallsecond was stuck for
words.

Kanydrin did not want to pressure Thanja. Their relationship had never
been one of those traditional ones where the husband issued commands
and orders for his wife to follow. He loved Thanja, and respected her
intelligence and decision-making abilities. There was no doubt in
Kanydrin's mind that she would do what was best, "I will follow you
anywhere, Thanja."

"I appreciate that, and I do know it is a big decision to make. Our
dragonrider children are settled at River Bluff, and they can be with us in
moments, the other two are old enough to make their own decisions on the
matter." Jerkin at twenty one turns would almost certainly have an opinion,
Tanrin might have other ideas, but she knew they could talk him around to
whatever decision they made.

"They are ready to make their own decisions anyway. Where do _you_
want to be Thanja? That is what it really comes down to. I am happy
any place where you dwell. The children have to make the same decision
for themselves." At fifteen their youngest son was ready to either
choose a craft or a trade which would eventually put him out of their
home regardles.

"Right now, I think I want to go home, to the North."

Putting an arm around his wife's shoulders he drew her against his
side and pressed a kiss to her temple, "Then we'll go home."

She moved closer to him. "We'll tell people tomorrow."
