D'arvn

D'arvn

The next day as he'd promised he and Falzeth took their leave of the
Weyr. He'd spent some time discussing the arrangements with his
Weyrmate and together they'd cleaned out their extra room and made
certain everything was clean and no hazards could possibly interfere
with Bahji getting around in their Weyr.

Only minutes later he was there above Sunstone and circling down to
the clearing near her house where he'd brought her the first time.

"Bahji," he called as he walked up to the house.

The door opened and Bahji stepped out, her hand laying on the arm of
her mother. Bartona inclined her head to D'arvn, her face pinched with
concern. She spoke softly to Bahji. "You don't have to go back, Bahji.
Talk will die down."

Bahji shook her head. "No, mother. I'll just be a burden and I went to
the Weyr to avoid that to begin with. It's my home now."

Bartona sighed softly and nodded, walking towards D'arvn with Bahji.
The younger woman wrapped her coat around her to fend off the drizzle
of rain, her hands looking delicate and small against the thick
material. "Hello D'arvn."

"Hi Bahji, Are you ready?"

"Yes." Bahji nodded as Bartona stepped forward with a pack filled with
Bahji's clothing. It was handed to D'arvn, her mother's eyes filled
with clear worry.

He nodded to her mother and took the pack. "U'fo and I will take good
care of her ma'am," he said to the older woman and turned to put the
pack into his carry nets. "Falzeth and I will give her a ride home any
time she wants." Then he reached for Bahji's hand.

Bahji carefully took D'arvn's hand. Her normally perky and jovial
disposition had been replaced by a mask of determination and no little
wariness. The delicately boned hand in his was cold and she shivered
at the thought of returning /between/.

"Thank you, bluerider." Bartona flicked her gaze to Bahji. "Make sure
she eats. Her appetite..."

Bahji interrupted. "Will be fine."

"Oh believe me," he chuckled at the pair of them. "My weyrmate
U'fouinn will hover over her as much as you would Bartona. He'll make
sure she eats. I promise you she'll be well cared for."

Bahji sighed, knowing full well that those words would satisfy her
mother. But she didn't want to be mothered. She didn't want to be an
imposition on U'fouinn or D'arvn. She felt her mother's kiss on her
cheek and gave a half-hearted smile and murmured her farewell. She
heard her mother thanking D'arvn and turned to the dragon near them,
laying a light hand on the soft hide.

D'arvn's eyes crinkled as they mounted and strapped in. Then when the
wind had changed direction so his words wouldn't be carried to Bahji's
mother he turned his head and said softly... "You can tell him to
bugger off if he get's too cloying. He'll understand. Now smile and
wave."

Turning her head slightly to D'arvn she gave a slight smile and
nodded. She turned back towards her mother's direction and waved a
hand, the slight smile remaining on her mouth. She couldn't have seen
the tears on Bartona's face.

"Hang on," he said and moments later they were in the air. He circled
once when he saw Bahji's mother below watching them and then they rose
on an air current and popped between. He'd seen the tears on
Bartona's face and decided then and there to send the woman updates
about her daughter periodically. Time would tell if he would let the
young woman know about it.

The warm air of River Bluff greeted them after the cold of their
passage and he circled and they went directly to his own ledge. "We're
here," he said when they were finally down and he began to unbuckle.

To say that she _hated_ the cold of between would be an
understatement. All it did was bring back the horrible memory of...
She locked that thought away, and slowly unlocked her white knuckle
grip on the belt strapped around her. Her face was pale and she gave a
shiver, but nodded. She felt uncertain about being in the Weyr again,
but already the scents and the sounds were coming to her and it was a
familiar welcome.

Her searching fingers found the buckles and without aid, she unstrapped
herself.

He slid down and touched her leg when he was in position. "Slide
down," he said with his arms up to catch her.

She did as she was asked trusting D'arvn to ease her way off of the
blue. When he caught her and her feet touched the floor, she exhaled.
If she had her way, she would never ever feel that cold bite of
/between/ again. Next time she wanted to see her parents, she'd take a
boat. She murmured her thanks and stepped away from his blue, moving
carefully in the unfamiliar environment.

D'arvn knew how independent she was but she'd never been in his weyr
so he took her hand and tucked it into his elbow. "We're on the ledge
and we're two floors up from the bowl," he said. "But the nice thing
is that we're not that far from the dining hall if you want to go
down. Luckily U'fo and I usually take our meals here so no one has to
know you're here until you're ready. Alright?"

"Okay." Bahji nodded slowly, her fingers flexing at his elbow. Burst
appeared over head and settled on her shoulder. "Burst?"

The little bronze gave a croon of encouragement and sent a visual of
where she was standing and the area around her. She relaxed further.
"We can do this." She turned to D'arvn and smiled a little more
easily. "Thank you, D'arvn."

"Of course sweetheart," he smiled. He had a soft spot for the young
weaver. Maybe it stemmed from their shared craft and the hardships
she'd endured but he felt just a bit protective. He led her to her
room which was across the main living space from where he and U'fo
slept. They'd removed all the clutter and made sure the furniture was
well polished and it good working order. "There are fresh furs on the
bed and I'm going to go get us some dinner. I'll be right back."
