Description: There's oddly no jitters for Humari before the wedding..hmm...
Location: Sunstone Seahold
Date: month 8, day 2 of Turn 7
Humari stared at the mirror in front of her. Clad in only a shift,
she could see the edges of bruises along the tops of her shoulders,
but felt oddly calm about it. Her hair had been piled up in an
intricate knot she gazed at with a numb lack of appreciation. The knot
was plied with pink cloth flowers and to Humari it looked like she had
a lopsided pink growth on the top of her head. Her sister had lightly
stained her cheeks and lips with some sort of juice to give her a
lightly flushed look. She didn't know if she liked it or not. At least
the darkening powder that had been applied to her eyelids made them
look huge and soft. She supposed it looked pretty enough.
As her mother, sister and her brothers' wives bustled around her
chattering to themselves, Humari just continued to stare into the
mirror, moving an arm or foot when instructed. It was strange, she
decided distantly, that for the past few days, she'd felt so calm and
just…numb. She felt disconnected to herself but it seemed to please
both her mother and sister. It wasn't until her mother brought out the
dress that Humari roused out of her blankness to turn to say
something. "That isn't my dress. Taril had one made for me."
Yriadha arched a brow and huffed softly. "And I'm sure you can wear it
while you're cleaning your home. But it wasn't fit for a wedding gown.
You'll get it along with the rest of your gifts."
About to object further, she saw Torinya give her a minute shake of
her head from behind her mother and she fell silent. With a satisfied
smile, Yriadha approached with the armful. The women surrounded her,
wrestling her lax body into the dress. It was pulled onto her with
care and pulled up over her shoulders, arms gliding into the sleeves.
It was long sleeved and high necked, not revealing unnecessary flesh.
As they began to lace the back, she heard, "Suck in." She obediently
took a deep breath and regretted it as they began to tightly lace her
into the dress. The material pressed against the bruises on her back,
making her ache all along her spine and she could barely breathe
because of the dresses grip on her ribs.
A few more adjustments were made before Yriadha turned her back to
face the mirror. The rest of the women began to smile and coo in
excitement at the image, but Humari just stared. She looked like a
ruffled pink and white…poof. The skirt was wide and cascaded with the
dreaded pink and white ruffles. The sleeves were puffed at the
shoulders and dangled with pink and white ribbons, clinging to the
rest of her arms and narrowing to points over her hands. The dress
ended at the middle of her neck, where pearls ( her mothers) were
strung. But the bodice was a contrast from the skirt and arms. It
clung to her curves, near skin-tight, and the lacing had made her
waist even smaller than it already was. The dress was a mixture of
innocence and seduction. Humari hated it immediately.
What made it worse was the every breath caused an deep ache along her
back. She closed her eyes, trying to breathe as carefully as she
could. "Would you like more water?" Torinya offered the cup and Humari
took it gratefully to ease her parched throat. She drank it eagerly
and handed the cup back.
As they got her slippers ready, Humari felt the ache slowly ease and
the anxiousness that she had began to feel creep into her stomach
faded away. She lifted her feet when asked and felt the slippers slide
on. She even gave a slight smile as Torinya kissed her cheek. As she
was led from the room to be presented to her eldest brother, she
didn't even blink. It was time.
