The door was open, but Yriadha paused at the threshold and knocked
sharply. "Bryvin, I have the tithe hides for you to look at."
He flourished his signature onto the hide he was working on and his
assistant took it and put another in front of him. "Thank you Erstel,
I'll have to read it first," he said and motioned the Headwoman in.
His smiled widened when Yriadha entered and his assistant exited the
room and closed the doors.
He held his hand out for the hides she carried "Thank you for bringing
them," he said.
"You're quite welcome. " She stopped and looked at him for a moment,
taking in the smile and finally returning it. "We do have enough for
the tithes, but I'm afraid the produce requested may dig into the
winter stores."
"Hmmm," he mused as he looked through the information. "Have we
received our tithe from Echo Ridge? They have some fine groves and I
heard their harvest was very fine."
"We have not. I received a missive that their tithe will be late this
year. They did not give a reason."
"We've had this issue with them in the past. I will remind the Holder
of his duties to us and the Weyr." In his own mind he knew who he was
going to send and he was determined this would not happen again.
"How many times must you remind them before they regularly tithe as
they should?" Yriadha sighed and then straightened. "Another matter to
bring up of course." She handed him another hide. "I'll need the use
of the grove if possible. My youngest is to be wed."
"Tithe equals ground crews," he smiled tightly. "I'll remind them they
will have to recruit more people to man flame throwers." Then his
expression changed. "Well congratulations Yriadha, who's the lucky
bridegroom?"
She inclined her head. "That may work to encourage them." She pursed
her lower lip. "My daughter is to wed Taril. It's a good match for her."
Bryvin was both surprised and pleased. "That is an excellent match
Yridha," he nodded. "How ever did you pull it off?" He waived a hand
toward a chair for her to take a seat.
She sat, smoothing her hands over her skirt. "My daughter is fetching
enough and Taril was looking for a wife, " she replied smoothly. "He
is wealthy, despite his unfortunate scarring. Humari would make a good
wife for him."
"Good," he smiled. "I want him happy Yridha," he said in a firm tone.
"See that she does keep him that way. The Hold will benefit and by
extension you will benefit even if he does not know it at the moment."
He knew it was a very broad hint but he also understood how the
Headwoman's mind worked.
Intelligent eyes sparked with interest and acknowledgement; she
inclined her head. "She knows her duty, Bryvin. She will keep him
happy and provide him with children." Her lips lifted. "Of course, you
are invited to the ceremony as well."
"Well thank you," he smiled more genuinely. "I would be delighted to
attend my friend Taril's wedding to such a lovely and compliant young
woman."
"Of course you are very welcome." Yriadha's smile didn't waver. She'd
make sure that Humari was compliant for her husband and remained so.
"Will you need anything more from me this afternoon?"
He looked at her speculatively for a moment. But then shook his head.
"Thank you Yriadha," he said. "I've got to get though this hidework
before the Conclave. They'll want a full accounting. so, I'm afraid
I'll be here for awhile. Perhaps you can bring dinner later?"
"I certainly can. I can aid you with the hidework, if you like."
Yriadha inclined her head. If Bryvin was indeed in contention as the
new Lord Holder, it would not be amiss to curry favor.
That wasn't exactly what he'd been thinking about but he hid his smirk
and nodded. "Thank you Yriadha." Their former Lord had had his
mistress on call at any time he felt the desire. Though he might not
have realized Bryvin knew. The woman was discreet and not a threat so
he had just let it go without comment. He was going to have to make an
arrangement for himself soon. He was no longer inconspicuous nor could
he wander the streets with only his canine at night. Nor was he going
to deny himself. But he had to be certain of the Headwoman before he
made any request for her assistance. "I'd appreciate your help later."
