Corofel was whistling when he crossed the distance from the Hold to Vintner
Hall. This time had permission and wrapped package. His new friend had a
birthingday and Corofel wanted to celebrate it with him.
Said apprentice was now thirteen turns old and excited since he was no
longer one of the youngest in the barracks.
He had been at the vintner hall for a few months and was finally finding
his place to a point. Sitting on his bunk, he was reading a few letters
from home. His mother had sent him something.
After asking direction from passing drudge, Corofel located the apprentice
dorm and knocked the door, peeking his head in. "Hiya Ro!" he greeted
cheerfully.
His head came up and then his face broke out into a smile. Corofel's
presence was welcome and he was hoping that meant getting out to do
something fun. Since it was his birthingday he only had a halfday of duties
so he was free now.
"Hey! My mam sent me some socks. I suppose she thinks I'll freeze here."
"That's mams for you, they never send anything cool. Hey, happy birthday,
this is for you!", Corofel tossed him the package.
He caught it, showing a dexterous nature that only recently had begun to
assert itself. Grinning, he started to open it. "Wonder what
it is.."
"Not socks, that's for sure," Corofel chuckled.
"Oh wow! That's crazy!" he pulled a knife out of the package and turned it
this way and that, examining it. He had never had anything
so fine in his entire life.
Corofel just shrugged. He had generous, monthly allowance and honestly, he
rarely even touched it so he had savings too.
"Thanks I mean...wow." He was still shaking his head, handling the knife
reverently. It was some time before he put it in its case, intending
to hide it from the boys that might try to have it for their own. "Corofel,
that was a great gift." He brought his head up and caught the other boy's
gaze for a moment, seeing him in a new light. Unlike most Blooded folk,
this boy was generous. Maybe they really could be friends. "So umm
I have duties free the rest of the day. You wanna go see if we can get some
cake?"
"I'm always up for cake!" Corofel jumped to his feet.
Leading him out the dormitory, they went toward the Dining Hall. There
weren't many there this hour so Rohagelen went up to one of the drudges
cleaning. "Mam, it's my birthingday and this is my friend. Is there any
cake?" He was trying to look sweet and beguiling. Was it working?
"I'll see what I can get for you," the drudge promised and disappeared to
the kitchen.
"So how are things at the Hold?" Apparently he wasn't on lockdown anymore
so that was good. They could go exploring maybe.
"Everyone is still tiptoeing around Lady Benani, she's in really bad
shape," Corofel said with sad voice. He wasn't sure what was wrong with her,
nobody told him and he was not allowed see her. And he liked Benani, she
had been nice as a fostermother.
"Oh well that's not any good. It's weird that she was gone and then they
found her and got her back. What do you think happened while she
was gone? I mean...did she run away or something?" Sometimes holder women
did that. He didn't know why really but he knew it happened.
"No, someone kidnapped her. And that someone also poisoned the Captain of
the guard," that much Corofel knew, from listening gossip when
people didn't know he was around.
"What?!?" Rohagelen's face changed into a mask of incredulity and shock.
Lady Holders were gentle, refined women. Why on Pern would someone
want to kidnap one of them? Poisoning the Guard Captain was also something
out of his ken. Whoever it was sure was evil. "Well if they catch whoever
it is, they should be exiled or maybe even worse." He said that
matter-of-factly.
"If Zathris gets him, it's the worse," Corofel was ready to bet on it.
The drudge came back. "There's no cake, I'm sorry, but there are bubblies,"
she handed them both two, fresh-from-oven, steaming hot pies. "The cook
said that next time warn her day before and she'll bake a cake."
"Ooh, bubblies!" Corofel wasn't missing a cake if there was bubblies.
"Oh, tell her thanks then." He took his and began to taste it, happy with
his lot. He had a new knife, a new friend, and a bubbly. Plus he was older.
He was on top of the world.
