Zathris

Reven

Despite everything that happened with Benani, Zathris was not unaware
of other events occurring all over Pern. One other event in
particular was troubling - that of Reven's kidnapping. The two had
occurred at almost the same time. While Zathris had never thought his
father held such a thing dear, Zathris had always placed great
importance on family. Arippa might not be his by blood, but she was
by marriage and that was just as good. Reven was now included in that
fold.

Now that things were settling into something of a pattern and Reven
had been home with a little time to recuperate, it was time to write
his relative. A drudge with a firelizard sat patiently waiting while
he penned his note, then attached it to the bronze firelizard who,
after a tidbit, took flight only to appear over Reven's head, then
settle on his desk before him.

At Green Valley, Reven nearly came out of his skin when a firelizard
appeared above him in his room. He had been jumpy anyway, but having
the little creature suddenly appear had been downright unnerving. The
bronze tilted his head and looked at Reven as if to say, "You are
strange."

Seeing the note, Reven took it, and broke the seal.

"Reven,

I have been informed of the various events that have taken place at
Green Valley. As you might have heard, we have had similar trying
times. In the hopes of helping family, I would like to procure some
firelizard eggs and send one to you and Arippa. A firelizard was
instrumental in finding Benani and I think it would be beneficial to
own one. In addition, my Captain of the Guard has started a program
where we train guard canines. I would like to purchase two pups and
send them along with a trainer who will then allow you to bond with
the canines and train them to be protectors.

Zathris"

Reven sat down back his desk and stared at the letter for a moment
without really seeing it. A firelizard and guard canines. Similiar
trying times. Instrumental in finding Benani. There was someone else
on Pern who had went through what he had went through, and Reven
suddenly wished he could talk with her, maybe she would understand and
empathize the way others couldn't.

The bronze flit rustled his wings impatiently. Reven realized that the
creature was waiting for a response, and so Reven snatched up his
stylus.

"Lord Zathris,
thank you for your offer. I will gladly accept whatever aid you can
send. Security has become an increasing issue for Green Valley since
my kidnapping. Now that Arippa is with child, I am especially worried
about keeping her safe. A firelizard and canines would be most welcome.
Also, I send my best wishes to Lady Benani's speedy recovering. I
empathize.

The firelizard accepted the second note, then launched into the air
once more. Zathris was waiting and immediate read it upon arrival.
The creature tilted his head and chirruped, reminding Zathris that he
hadn't offered a treat. The Lord Holder paused to give a bit of
uneaten meatroll, then peruse the message. He nodded, then penned one
last one in return before attaching it to the firelizard once more.

Reven hadn't left his chair, despite being uncertain if the Lord
Holder would respond quickly or not. He was less surprised when the
bronze firelizard appeared out of thin air this time, and he even
scratched the beast's little headknob before taking the note.

"Reven,

I will obtain firelizard eggs and pups for you both as soon as
possible and will let you know when they are on their way. In the
meantime, be well and be safe. Let me know if there is anything else
I can do for you. Give Arippa my love.

Zathris"

Reven looked back at the bronze flit, uncertain as to how to make it
leave, "Er, that's it. You can, huh, go now." And that seemed to do
the trick as the firelizard gave an offended huff at being given no
treat before he launched from Reven's desk and disappeared once again.
It was exciting to think that soon he and Arippa would have their own
firelizards. He couldn't wait to share the news with her.
