Sophque

The waves came in and went out. The tides changed. And she was alone
again. The last time she'd stood on this dock it had been Morin who
had found her. Morin who had reached out and now he too was gone,
taken by the sea.

The waves came in and went out. She hated the sea.

But the sea didn't care. Kicking it only made her boots wet. Listening
to it every night only made her cry. Knowing it was there, uncaring,
unresponsive, unfeeling made her sick inside. But she guarded her
expression. "There's always hope," she whispered into the wind.

That is what he'd said that day on the dock where she'd kept her vigil
for Inokin. "There's always hope." She shook her head to try and clear
away the voice she'd never hear again. Inokin had never returned, his
ship had never returned, and the sea had neither cared nor apologized.

The waves came in and went out. She hated the sea.

Turning her back on it she walked off the docks as the workers came on
duty and another ship sailed around the point headed toward home and
safety. Still the sea swelled and waves crashed against the tall
pillars of stone in the bay from which Sunstone took it's name.
Similar waves had taken Morin and battered him until there was no more
life in his body. Oh what she would give just to be able to hold him
one last time. But she couldn't and she hadn't been able to see or
touch him. She picked up a stone and flung it into the waters as she
walked down the beach alone again.

The waves came in and went out. She hated the sea.

Morin had given her a job but more than that he'd been kind and loving
and everything to her. She'd loved him even though she'd known he
didn't love her the same way. She could banish his headaches and help
him sleep when sleep escaped him. Her stories could touch him and an
banish the usual dour expression he wore. She remembered his rare
smiles and the tone of his voice and she wrapped her arms around
herself remembering his touch.

The waves came in and went out. She hated the sea.

She wanted to walk out into the waves shouting her rage and just let
go and join Morin in death. But Sophine didn't deserve to lose both
her parents that way. For her daughter she wouldn't take her life no
matter how much she might want it. She couldn't bear to think what
kind of life their beautiful little girl would have should she take
the easy way out.

She cried and her tears fell into the water lapping at her feet.

The waves came in and went out. She hated the sea.

Candlemarks later she was numb and cried out for the time being. Her
family didn't understand her need to be alone at times or the way she
avoided the water front at times. She didn't know if she could meet
the man Yriadha had set up for her to meet. But he was a sea captain
and she didn't want anything to do with the sea ever again.

The waves came in and went out. She hated the sea.

She turned her back on it and went to her mothers to get her daughter.
Tomorrow was another day and the sea would still be there.
