Description: Reven's prodigal sister returns to see him, and is escorted by
Caenir into the hold
Location: Green Valley Hold
Date: month 8, day 11 of Turn 7
Renette had not been home in a long time, and the sight of Green
Valley as the wagon moved closer was a good one. When they crested the
lip of the hilly ridge and looked down into the lush valley she
smiled. It had not felt much like home before, mostly because she had
dreams of being something other than a wife and mother. She'd gone to
Dolphin Cove when she was fifteen and joined the harpercraft there.
With her recent promotion to junior journeywoman she had also been
granted a little leave time to go home and visit her family.
When they drew to a stop in the courtyard Renette hopped out first, to
the consternation of the stablehand nearby that was helping the other
ladies out. Renette wore a pair of breeches and her harper blue tunic
cinched with a sash. Her hair, a mix of blonde and auburn, flowed down
her back in an unruly fashion. Renette had no doubt her mother would
faint when she saw her. She_could_ have worn a dress but she refused
to be something she wasn't.
The face was not a new one, for Caenir was well acquainted with
Reven's family. Well, maybe not_that_ well acquainted, but he'd met
all the immediate people. The thing was, that face had been a lot
smaller and a little chubbier the last time he'd seen it. Over the
turns, Renette had grown and she was no longer the little girl that
Caenir remembered. "Renette." He inclined his head to her as he did
everyone else, but his hand twitched. The last time he'd seen her,
she had pigtails, ones that had begged him to gently tug whenever he
would pass by her. However, the person that stood there, gazing
around while the rest of the passengers slowly unloaded, was not the
child he and Reven had last seen ten turns prior. "It's been a
while."
Renette looked up at the man speaking to her, her brow furrowed for a
moment before recognition dawned, "Caenir? You've aged." She grinned,
the same sort of grin that Coran and Reven shared. She had met Caenir
briefly when Reven had been home visiting from his fostering at Red
Rush.
"So've you." He'd not been around her much, but she'd been a cute kid
and he'd enjoyed teasing her. That had been a while ago and the woman
standing before him now was a far cry from that previous version of
Renette. "Doin' all right?"
She flicked her hair over her shoulder, and then turned as the man
driving the wagon tossed her canvas bag down onto the ground. "Thanks."
She muttered with a roll of her eyes as she scooped the bag up and
tossed it over her shoulder, "I am fine, apart from being a little
travel worn. How have you been? Are you living at Green Valley now?"
"Aye. Since Reven became Holder." Caenir's fingers stretched toward
the bag and curled around the handle so he could tug at it in an
effort to carry it for her. "Stablemaster now. Trying to get a
runner breeding program off the ground."
Renette raised an eyebrow but released the bag for the man to carry.
Even when she was ten she had thought he was cute. But then, most
little sisters_did_ find their older brothers' friends cute. Now ten
Turns later he was definitely a grown man, and cute no longer seemed
appropriate. She supposed handsome would do. "Stablemaster, huh?
Congratulations." She said as they walked toward the Hold, "Tell me
how Reven is really doing. Mother's letters were always very vague, of
course."
At first, Caenir didn't answer. He tugged his hat a little lower on
his head and let his eyes wander over the horizon of the hold.
Finally he spoke, but he had a feeling she wouldn't like the answer.
"As well as can be expected. More than that and you'd best to talk
with him - tis his business."
Renette rolled her eyes and sighed, "Oh, Caenir, still has tight
lipped as ever." She reached down, took his arm, and then looped hers
through it, "Well, at least escort me into the hold properly. I am
getting enough stares wearing these pants as it is." She grinned.
Caenir glanced down at the crook of his arm where she'd weaved hers
through then focused on the path before them. "All right. Best you
see Reven soon though. I think he'll be happy."
"He better be." She grumped good-naturedly, "I rode a long way to get
here." Renette and Reven had always been close despite their age
difference, mostly because they were the most alike between all the
siblings. Coran had always been quiet and intellectual, while Renette
wanted to tag along behind Reven and do anything that he did. Not only
did they share the same complexion, blue eyes, and full mouth, they
also had the same dry sense of humor.
Caenir's mouth tugged slightly at the corners at her tease. "Yes,
well, if he's not, there are others who will be." Notably her parents
would be pleased if nothing else, but Caenir knew his friend adored
his sister and would be thrilled with her visit. "Been a long time
since they've seen you too."
"The rogue daughter returns." Renette laughed. She knew her decision
perplexed her parents but she supposed that they loved her the best
they knew how.
"They still like seeing you." They had to. They were her parents,
how could they not love their little girl? Caenir turned a corner and
then motioned to a door. "Reven's Office."
Renette lifted her hand from his elbow, "Thank you Caenir. I will take
it from here." It felt weird knowing the Holder's office was her
brother's. Especially since Reven had always been more of a farmer
than anything.
"Sure you can handle it?" Caenir managed a half grin. "I'll carry
your bag to the quarters where you'll be staying." Qorri probably
already had it cleaned and ready to go.
"Thanks Cae." Renette smiled before knocking on Reven's door and then
throwing it open, "Big brother!" She boomed as she stepped inside.
