The healer was ready for things to get back to normal. Besides his
sister leaving, his niece Impressing, the Lady Holder disappearing,
and now this harper apparently being behind it all-Chupsin was just
tired. He wished people would act normal and do what they were
supposed to. Was it not enough to expect folks to do their duty and
then get on with it? Reading over his appointment list, he saw that
Loella was coming in and he knew why. Hopefully, it would all go as
planned without any surprises. Faranth knew that Captain still gave
him the bad eye even though he had saved his life.
When she arrived at the healers she waited a few minutes and was then
shown into an exam room. She did the usual preparations and then sat
on the table to wait.
After a knock, Chupsin waited and then entered the area. The healer was
carrying a clipboard and was wearing his usual purple robes. "Good afternoon
Loella. How are we feeling today?" It was his standard line to ask them
about
any aches or pains. It also gave him a chance to watch and interact with
her.
"I'm doing alright, I guess," she offered without a smile.
About as to be expected. "Just so you know, first we'll be doing an
exam to make sure your stitches and everything have healed as they
should. If there's ever a point where you feel pain, please let me
know immediately. It shouldn't take very long." He sat his clipboard
down and went to wash his hands and prepare himself.
She nodded mutely and watched him go to prepare. She knew he'd
suffered a loss even more horrific than her own yet he seemed to be
able to cope with it... at least he did now. But she didn't know him
well enough to ask questions. It just seemed like her heart was a
stone when it came to thinking about the son they'd lost.
"We named him Karlo," she said with a sad smile when he came back.
"It's hard to think about him."
Once he was done, he sat down on the stool, but he didn't begin the
exam. Instead, he looked back at her and considered what she'd said.
He had never named his child. "When it's the first child and you don't
have any others, the loss is harder. You'll never forget but in time
you'll be able to have another and it isn't so hard. For some women
they feel guilt over disappointing their husbands. Loella-none of this
was your fault. None of it." Chupsin would never have another unless
he found another wife. He didn't know if he ever wanted that again.
"How long," she asked meaning until she could be with her husband
again so she could get pregnant. "I just feel so empty."
"You need to have at least two cycles before getting pregnant to make
sure that everything is healed properly to be safe. If anything seems
out of the ordinary though during that time, please tell me
immediately." He scribbled some notes as he spoke and then put the
stylus down and looked directly at her. "One thing though, even though
your body might be ready, your mind may not be. So make sure you are
completely ready-you and your husband-before you go further. Sometimes
after such a traumatic incident there can be hidden issues you aren't
even aware of. And then with such an important concern like a baby, they can
be magnified like thoughts of safety."
This girl had been one of his patients for some time and he knew her
family so it wasn't hard to hope for her, to wish her the best as she
went on with her life and got over this. Still, Chupsin wanted her to
understand and proceed with caution. "If I had married soon after...I
think I would have wanted to lock my wife into a closet if she had
gotten pregnant so nothing could hurt her. I would have been so afraid
that it could happen again that I wouldn't have been fair to her. So
maybe you need to have a talk with Karhal to make sure everyone is
okay." His eyes dropped as he thought about Alivya again.
"Yes well that is practically what Karhal is doing to me now after
I've already lost the baby. He's acting like I'm going to break if he
touches me." She took a deep breath. "Can you tell him when it's alright?"
"If he would be open to speaking to me or even perhaps both of you together
to put him more at ease, I would be glad to have a discussion. More
than happy. I fully understand his fears and after what happened, he's
entitled to them. However, in the long term, he's going to have to
work through them with you to have a healthy marriage." A traumatic
event effected everyone and sometimes the ripples were unseen and
could cause all sorts of issues down the road that could crop up.
"I will let him know," she said. "I can bring him to one of our
appointments if you think that will help." She smiled at Chupsin. He'd
always taken very good care of her and she trusted him more than any
of the other healers.
"Let's try that and see." He scribbled another note. "Allright Loella,
if you're ready then, lay back m'dear and we'll get this done." He
nodded and stood up, readying himself.
Loella nodded and lay back for the process. It wasn't her favorite
thing to do but she trusted the healer.
