Humari

Humari walked away from Taril's office, her fingers lingering over her lips as she recalled that parting kiss. The look on his face when she had left...she couldn't describe it. There was so much there that she didn't know how to answer or if she should answer it. She was beginning to genuinely like her husband and she respected him. She mused over that. It was so different than anything she had been expecting. She'd been expecting cruelty so often that it was nice to know that he wasn't going to hurt her. He'd never raised a hand to her, even when he'd had the right to. He was nothing like she expected him to be and even though he insisted on his marital rights, which she had expected, he was never rough about it and it didn't hurt anymore. But now, now she carried his child and she'd made him laugh. He sounded so happy. She really liked that open laugh he'd given her. And the soft touches. Those were rare, but made her feel special.

She walked down the path, face set in a contented smile as she pressed her hand over her abdomen. Would the child be a son or a daughter? What did he want? She'd forgotten to ask, but it seemed like most men, he preferred a son. She hoped she could give him a boy child for their firstborn. What would they name him?

A sudden hard grip on her upper arm jolted her out of her musing. She was spun to face Yarmel, whose expression was thundercloud dark. Without a word, he dragged her to a nearby empty storage building and shoved her in.

Eyes wide, she stared up at her older brother. "Yarmel...what are you doing? I..."

"Be silent!" Yarmel towered over her, making her cringe immediately. "What do you think you are doing?"

Confused, Humari shook her head. "I was just going home..."

Grabbing her by the upper arms, Yarmel gave her a sharp shake that clacked her teeth together. "You were in the docks. Alone. Walking. Alone. Trying to run away again, Humari?" She shook her head emphatically, but he ignored her. "Seeing a new girl lover?"

She tried to struggle away. "I was talking to my husband! You can't do this any more! He said you couldn't. You're not allowed! I'm wi..."

Yarmel sneered and grabbed her face with a vise-like grip, fingers fiercely clamped around her jaw to stop her from talking. "Not allowed? I am the head of our family, Humari. I can do what ever in the blazes I like." She whimpered, but he only held on tighter, watching the tears well up in her eyes to track down her face. "Don't you ever let me see you walking about without an escort, do you understand me? You're not to be trusted."

Humari spoke around the pain in her jaw. "He trusts me." The words were almost too garbled to understand.

Yarmel openly scoffed. "So you've got him fooled. It shouldn't be too hard, he's half a man. " He looked down at her, releasing her jaw to let his hand tangle in her hair. "Bet he couldn't even perform properly, but as long as he gets it where its supposed to be, that's all that matters."

She flushed immediately at the implication and a spurt of anger at his dismissal of Taril made her brave. Humari's eyes narrowed. "He's twice the man you'll ever be!"

That brought an immediate flush of anger to Yarmel's cheeks and before Humari could even blink, a flash of pain flared on the side of her face and she stumbled back, but was caught by the grip on her hair. She tasted blood on the inside of her lip, and a surge of panic swelled in her. He was going to beat her! Where was Sissa? She had flown off to play with other flits...could she not... Her hair was yanked and she was pulled against Yarmel, staring up at his dark eyes.

Yarmel bent to speak face to face to Humari, his teeth clenched. "I should show you what a man really is."

It was then that she smelled the whiskey on his breath and she paled as what he was implying sank in. Her eyes widened in horror and she began to struggle frantically. When he laughed, a surge of anger and fear for the unborn child, still so new in her womb, surfaced. She shrieked, shot her hands up, and she dug her nails deeply down his face. "You don't get to hurt me any more!" She was released as he howled in pain and surprise, blood welling out of long gouges along his cheeks and jaw. Pure adrenaline made her hop back as he swung at her, and without thought, she kicked. Her points of her delicate boot connected with the soft flesh between Yarmel's thighs.

Choking, he fell, holding his battered groin with a look of utter pain on his face. Not thinking, she kicked again, furious that he should even think of potentially hurting her child. The pointed toe slammed into Yarmel's face, breaking his nose with a crunch. That sound and the blood now welling with gurgling screams of rage and pain shocked her back to her senses. She did the only think she could think to do. She lifted her skirts and ran.

She ran as fast as she could to her home, bolting the door shut behind her. Moments later, Sissa appeared from between, eyes whirling with confused anger and fear at the emotions pouring off of her Humari. Humari headed for the kitchen, grabbing a long handled knife and fled to her bedroom, locking the door behind her and hiding against the wall. She wouldn't let him hurt her. Ever again.
