Sophque

When the summons came the drudge was almost frantic. "The Lady miss,
she needs you right away, her dress... it.... she needs you now."

Sophque dropped the piece she'd been working on and picked up her
sowing kit and ran after the drudge. She arrived at the door a moment
later and knocked softly.

"Please come in," Xeladrie called, impatience and frustration in her tone.
How could there be a tear? So inconvenient.

Vinesse turned and opened the door at the Lady's command and invited
the seamstress in with a wave of her hand.

"My Lady," Sophque dropped a deep curtsey. "I was summoned?"

"Yes. There's a tear in this...this costume, and I have to appear soon."
There was a bit of a wail in Xeladrie's tone.

"Yes ma'am," Sophque said in a brusque tone and pulled thread from her
kit and quickly pulled it through her needle. Then she stepped up to
the lady and turned up her over skirt using quick whip stitches to
repair the squared off rent in her gown. "We'll have you fixed in no
time."

Vinesse lifted a brow with a half smile and walked over to Xeladrie.
"See My Lady? I knew they would have someone with the right skills."

"Oh thank you, thank you so much, miss...uh..." Xeladrie's voice trailed off.

"Sophque ma'am," she answered looking up briefly with a smile. She was
seeing quite a bit of work that needed to be done to this dress and as
she whipped up the final stitches on the tear and knotted the thread,
She bit her needle loose and stood.

"May I look over this dress more thoroughly when you're done with it
ma'am?" She kept her eyes downcast so as not to appear above her
station. She was truly aghast at the condition of this particular
dress. She could see several spots where stitching needed to be made
to tack trim back in place. But those could wait since the Lady seemed
to be in such a hurry.

"Thank you, Sophque." Now that someone was attending to the issue,
Xeladrie felt a little less overwhelmed.

She waited patiently as the woman did her work, then nodded as she heard
the request. "Does it have other issues?" she asked in a worried tone.

"It does ma'am," she replied. "It looks like a rushed job and I'd just
like to check all the seams and trim to make sure they're firmly
attached. There is nothing that will fall off tonight... that I can
see."

"Thank you," she said with her voice a little calmer. "It was a bit," she
admitted.

"Of course," Sophque stepped back. "Is there anything else you need
ma'am," she asked as she dropped a curtsy. She hoped the new Lady
would continue to employ her in the household. Her extra perks of
additional monies had dried up when Morin had died and soon she and
Sophine would have to move back in with her parents, and that was
something she dearly wanted to avoid.

"Are you very experienced with sewing and repair?" Xeladrie asked.

"Yes ma'am," she looked back up with a smile. "I can make anything
I've seen, and I can repair almost any garment."

"And what is your job here at the Hold day to day? By which I mean are you
in service to anyone specific, or?"

Sophque thought a moment and then decided to skate as close to the
truth as possible. "I worked for Lord Morn and made many of his
clothes. There was no Lady here at the time."

"And now are you free? You see, I know I'll be attending many more formal
events, and I'll probably need repairs and alterations," she explained.

"Yes ma'm," she brightened even more. "I had hoped to serve a proper
Lady when the Lord married." It wasn't at all the way she'd envisioned
but it was work that she was good at and her needle would fly. "Thank
you ma'am."

"Well then, I'd love to have you work on my items and make sure
everything's repaired, tailored, and up to date. if you'd care to?" it was
a genuine invitation and not a carefully-couched order.

By this time Sophque was genuinely happy for the first time since
Morin's death. "Yes I would like that very much."

"Well then I'd be pleased by your services. Can you adjust items to be a
bit more flattering as well as repair?" she asked.

"Yes," she said and smiled before adding. "And more comfortable."

"I would love to have you assist me, then."

Sophque smiled and curtseyed once again.

"My Lady, the Lord is waiting for you," Vinesse murmured in her ear.
"I'll get the woman set up for you." An older woman, she had come with
Xeladrie as an attendant from Turquoise Bay. Her purpose was to help
oversee her ladies and help keep the new young Lady Holder on time and
appropriately attired. She was also tasked with setting up her
personal household and any communication channels between the Lady and
her father's Hold. They couldn't very well use the signal drums now
could they?

"Oh - yes I suppose so." She felt a brief urge to wait and not have to
go, but that would be petulant and troublesome, and she didn't need to be.

"I'll see you later, Sophque," she added.
