The lecture on wing formations hadn't been overwhelmingly exciting; J'ackt
found it dry, though Zith surprisingly paid a great deal of attention to the
fact that bronzes usually led. J'ackt had listened to two voices during the
lecture. K'deren's and Zith's exclamations about how _they_would some day
lead an entire wing and then the Weyr. There was a passing thought that Zith
would probably start trying to shove him at the Weyrleader's weyr from the
moment of graduation while he was trying to claw away from it.
While J'ackt had kept silent on any questions, Zith had no such
compunctions. He immediately began questioning Donneth. }: Why is it that
Yours is Wingsecond when there are other bronzes? Why can't they lead? Can I
lead when we join a wing?:{
}:It's a good question,:{ Donneth began. }:Sometimes it isn't just the
colour of a dragon's hide, it's their rider too that mean they can lead.
Sometimes it's about how long they've been flying together, and how well
they know their wing and the area.:{
}: Well, I guess that's right, but I will lead someday.:{ Zith was matter of
fact, inhaling to puff out his chest. }: I will be big and strong. :{
J'ackt looked up at K'deren and muttered. "Are all bronzes determined to
drag their riders by the short hairs?"
K'deren chuckled, "It depends on their character, some are more mellow than
others, some are demanding from the start, and some develop over time."
"Zith is far from mellow." J'ackt admitted.
The little bronze stayed puffed up and proud. }: No. I am not. :{
There was a pause as Zith suddenly sniffed the air and fell into a
crouch, rump up in the air. }: I smell it. There is a small furry
nearby. :{ Zith smacked his lips and his eyes scanned the area as he
went still.
J'ackt sighed and looked at K'deren. "You didn't bring a feline or
small canine with you, did you?"
"No pets," K'deren said. "I'm not sure Donneth would know what to do with
one at the moment, he has enough trouble comprehending how much of a change
a baby is bringing to my life."
}: There is a small furry. I smell it. :{ Zith stalked towards the open door
of the classroom and stuck his head out, then went still, only the tip of
his tail quivering. }: I see it! I see it! It's there. Under the cot. It's
making a squeaky sound. Can I eat it? :{
"No, Zith. Don't eat G'fel's other feline. He's still angry about the first
one!" J'ackt turned away from K'deren, pinching the bridge of his nose. "He
doesn't want pets to keep. He...he ate a feline yesterday."
K'deren laughed. "That's something you'll need to teach him."
J'ackt arched a brow. "Teach him not to do? Shards, he thinks they're tasty
and I have to constantly watch that he doesn't try to eat canines too."
"A feline here or there, might become a holder's caprine or ovine once he's
older and you're flying sweeps," pointed out K'deren. "And that means the
Weyr would have to pay compensation, not to mention the damage it would do
to your reputation and that of Dolphin Cove."
That just sounded fun to J'ackt and something he'd done before on his own
when he couldn't find game. One brow arched. "If I'm caught, you mean."
"It's a bit different as a rider, than when you're holdless. Particularly
with your dragon's hide being so shiny, or if you end up with fancy knots
like these one day. You'll be looked upon to set an example."
That made J'ackt snort. "I'm no example. Never will be." He shrugged. If
Zith wanted to pick off a caprine or ovine, that was fine with him. "Don't
really want fancy knots either."
"Sometimes the knots find you," K'deren told him. "If, Zith one day flies a
senior gold, then you're stuck with them."
Faranth help him if that ever happened. J'ackt was about to reply when he
heard a thud, a snap and then a pathetic little mew. He whirled. "Zith! Put
it down!"
Zith immediately spat out a bedraggled, slobbery, hissing feline. It bolted
out of the door, leaving a trail of dragon slobber behind it. }: But that
was my snack! :{
J'ackt pinched the bridge of his nose and glanced at K'deren. "You really
want him leading a wing?"
}: I can lead a wing and eat furries. :{ Zith replied archly. }: They'll
just be bigger furries. :{
"Perhaps when he's matured a little," K'deren said with a grin "It will
happen. I know it seems hard to believe at the moment."
"Very hard at the moment." J'ackt stared at the puffed up little bronze, who
strutted back to him with a proud tilt to his head.
"By the time you've graduated and been in the wings for a turn or so, you'll
not believe the change in him."
"If you say so."
"Tell you what, you come and see me then, and I'll be able to say 'I told
you so'," laughed K'deren.
J'ackt paused and tilted his head, blowing hair from his brow. He would have
to hack it off again soon. "So, you don't work with N'vanik, do you?"
"No, D'hol is my wingleader."
"Oh." He'd heard stories of D'hol, but had never really gotten to know him
other than by sight. "Well, I guess we'll just see about Zith."
"You will."
