K'mai

K'mai

Sitting on the beach, he found himself whittling. It wasn't anything
beautiful. The wood hadn't taken any sort of shape. The weather was
fair and he'd completed wing drills earlier in the day.
**Maybe a swim in a minute.**

Leith was already in the water, enjoying it immensely. The dolphins
had come and they were fun to talk to. All of a sudden, his head came
up. }:Sebeth?:{

The blue trumpeted a greeting as he spiraled down for a landing.
}:Hello Leith. Mine is here to see yours.:{

}:Sebeth and his are here!:{ Leith told E'rae as if the bluerider hadn't
looked
up at the noise. That announcement brought a smile to his face. It had been
too long. For obvious reasons he'd never gone back to River Bluff and it
pained
him not to have his best friend around anymore. Standing, he waited for
K'mai to
land and come over.

K'mai waved happily as he dismounted, hurrying over to E'rae. "Hello
stranger. It's been too long."

Grinning, he loped over and hugged the other rider. "Aye it has." It was a
long time before he let go. When he did, he stepped back to look at K'mai,
trying to see if there were any serious changes. "And how are you? You look
well enough."

"I'm great." K'mai gave him his usual grin. "How are you doing?" He
wasn't going to point out that E'rae still looked... haunted.

"Well...I'm flying again, which is a step in the right direction. And...I
have
a few friends here I'm getting to know. Nothing like you but maybe someday."
He shrugged. From where he had been, it was a long way. "I still go to the
healers to talk about things. I don't think I'll ever forget but it helps
not
to be there." He didn't say it but his mind said **and to see her**.

"Good. I'm glad you're settling in." K'mai patted him on the shoulder.
"It'll take time, but you'll get there."

"So tell me about what you've been doing. I'm sure you have some fun
stories."
That was another thing missing from Dolphin Cove-crazy parties and nights
with
K'mai ending up somewhere they never remembered going to.

"Ohh, I should tell you about Paruin's party. Turns out, I _can_
convince him to get into bed with me if there's a woman involved."
K'mai laughed.

For a moment it all faded away and E'rae was back before any of it had
happened.
And he smiled. "I hope you kept a trophy as proof since no one is going to
believe
you. Well besides the woman."

"And the half-dozen people who saw him leaving the bedchamber the next
morning." K'mai winked.

"Oh well done then." Laughing, he tried to be that man again if only
just for K'mai. "One good thing-even men at Dolphin Cove go naked."

"I have noticed this place is a quite a feast for the eyes." Whenever
he visited he tried to take some time to admire the residents. "And
you've given me a wonderful excuse to come here more often."

"Ah well take the excuse as much as you need. My weyr isn't much but
I'm sure we can find somewhere for you to bed down." He shrugged and
switched back into the old easy conversation. When you knew someone for
so long, it was hard not to. "I heard about the Hatching."

"Gold eggs are always big news. I know the girl who Impressed. Well,
met her anyway," K'mai said with a smile. "Sweet girl. I hope being a
rider doesn't change her too much." Goldriders had a terrible tendency
to be serious.

"I think it will to a point. So many things happen-especially in a Pass."
Being a rider hadn't changed him-everything else had. Then again, E'rae
might never have gone through that if he'd never Impressed. Those types
of situations didn't happen in Holds where pregnant women were untouchable.
He tried not to dwell on it too much, knowing he would never wish Leith
away.
"Good luck to her, though. Faranth knows River Bluff needed another gold."

"Hopefully this means we won't have to borrow someone else's."
Although K'mai wouldn't have minded having Tsaera come back again. Or
stick around. He didn't really know her personally but she'd been a
stable point in the Weyr for a long time.

"Maybe so. Then again it will be a long time for the girl to mature and
for the gold to breed most likely since she is young. So things will likely
remain the same for some time to come." And that was the problem when
the young ones Impressed. Of course it tended to happen from time to time
regardless.

"It'll all work out," K'mai said with his usual optimism. "So do you
have any good stories for me? I know you're not the partying type but
you must have heard _some_ gossip."

"Around here..." E'rae wasn't much for that these days but sometimes you
can't
help hearing things as they happen around you. "Apparently the Wingleader's
weyrmate is pregnant and it might be the Wingleader's or the Weyrleader's."

K'mai arched an eyebrow. "The Weyrleader? The same one that might've
fathered Rhosyn's baby?"

"Oh aye. Seems the Wingleader isn't too happy about it. But you know..it's
the
Weyrleader so what's he going to do? And I wonder if...the Weyrwoman-er
Rhosyn
that is...knows?" E'rae didn't know how all that worked but then again he
was just a
bluerider.

"Hmm, that man sure does get around. Although what can you expect with
bronzeriders?" K'mai did find it amusing that bronzeriders had such a
reputation for sleeping around but they were limited by such silly
things as only bedding women.

"True. K'sedel doesn't get around much though." E'rae shrugged, thinking
about something else they could talk about. "Things are relaxed here but the
weather is the same. I've made a few friends but no one I'd call close yet.
They've had a lot of changes in the past few turns. Oh..the Lord Holder's
son Impressed sometime back. His..illegitimate son."

K'mai tilted his head. "I think I heard that one. Acknowledged him
after Impression, didn't he?" Not wanting to raise a child was one
thing, but not even admitting one was yours... K'mai just didn't get
holders.

"Mmm. Course then it didn't matter as far as Heirs and all that." E'rae
understood it happened a lot more often than people let on. "How bout
we go and eat and I'll introduce you to some of my new wingmates?" He
looked up at the sun and judged it to be about that time. Of course K'mai
had come from a time difference so maybe not.

"Cute ones?" K'mai wiggled his eyebrows.

Chuckling, E'rae led the way down the beach toward the Weyr as the
dragons followed behind them. "Some of them."
