Kapera

~*~
Kapera carried the lunch tray into Cyradis' weyr herself, settling it
on the table and beaming at the other goldrider. She'd come to enjoy
their lunch meetings, and this time she had only the best of news. It
put her into high spirits.

"There's a couple extra cookies," she said triumphantly.

"Oh really?" the smile in Cyradis' eyes showed she knew there was
usually good news associated with extra cookies. "I like it when there
are extra cookies. What did the cook make for us today?"

"Some kind of nut cookies," she said, pouring drinks. "I guess it's
for the new clutch."

"Ahh yes," Cyradis smiled. "I do like those, especially when she puts
in the raisins." She looked at the tray and nodded. "Congratulations
on the fine clutch Kapera."

"Thank you. Even after the flight, I was still somewhat nervous,
especially when she took candlemarks to actually start laying them -
but it's a good number of eggs."

"It must have been very difficult not knowing if she would rise
again." Cyradis nodded knowing that day would come for her as well
though not for some turns yet if she was lucky. "But she's given us a
very fine clutch indeed. Some of those eggs are largish and sure to
hold bronze and brown unless I miss my guess."

"I'd settle for one bronze, honestly," Kapera admitted. "I just hope
there are enough Candidates. Losing a dragonet due to lack is an awful
event."

"There will be enough," Cyradis nodded. She was familiar with the
heartrending keen of a wandering hatchling unable to find their
lifemate. "We'll make sure."

"Thank you," Kapera said fervently. She'd never been able to forget the
one time it had happened to her. "I did see that a few more have come in
from the holds, including R'taran's brother," she added.

"Well that's good," Cyradis nodded. "The searchers are out and they've
reported some excitement in the holds since the gold egg at River
Bluff. We always see an uptick in the number of volunteers when there
is a gold egg reported." She took another of the cookies and munched a
bite. "How is Riyanth faring?"

"Oh, it's nice that it's carrying over here," Kapera said. The gossip must
spread on dragonwings. "I think it'll work out, then."

"I agree," Cyradis nodded. She wouldn't be doing her job as the Senior
Weyrwoman if she hadn't looked into her 'second's history. Not because
she was concerned by what she saw but because she was doing her due
diligence as the leader of the Weyr. She knew the history and some of
the things Kapera had gone through. She wasn't intending to put her
nose into the other woman's business but help her function to the best
of her ability, and back her up with understanding.

She picked up a meat roll and her tea. "I just wanted to let you know
I think you're doing a good job."

The praised warmed the younger goldrider's insides. She wasn't used to
being praised for her decisions - seen as indecisive or easily led or
pushed aside in favor of others, yes. Praised...not as much.

"Thank you, ma'am," Kapera said solemnly.

"Keep up the good work," was all Cyradis wanted to say on the subject.
As riders developed there were sometimes difficult spots and Kapera
seemed to have come through hers. She wasn't about to hark back to her
earlier times when she was actually performing well. "How are things
with J'nus," she smiled.

"They're going well. I'm really happy that Riyanth chose Kopth. I
tried not to bias her when she went up, I wanted the best possible
choice. But...it's much nicer when it's a friend, and it's opened some
doors." She couldn't help but smile at the thought.

"You don't know how many times I've tried to influence Panitath," she
shook her head. "But I think she got it right for the sake of the
Weyr."

"Say that again when they Hatch," Kapera said, but her voice had a laugh
in it.
