J'ackt

Pacing outside in the bowl, Zith was impatient as his lifemate was
closeted away with the Weyrleader, Weyrwoman and Weyrlingmaster. He
wanted his J'ackt out in the weyrbowl, safe with him and not away. He
could feel J'ackt's agitation as the conversation continued and
despite Loranth, Loseth and Panitath being nearby, showed his
annoyance with hard thumps of his tail.

}:Yours needs you to help him be calm Zith,:{ Panitath said knowingly.
She had calmed her own rider frequently over the turns they'd been
together. When they'd first come to Dolphin Cove she'd prevented hers
from doing bad things to Loseths.

}: I am not calm. I am upset.:{ The smaller bronze barely held back
his irritation in deference to the gold. }: Mine didn't do wrong. :{

}:Yes he did,:{ Panitath contradicted immediately. }:He got angry and
hurt the other one. _That_ was wrong.:{ her own much larger tail
twitched in irritation.

}: But the other hurt mine. And he threatened Ashareth's. Mine was...
:{ Zith had to pause. No, his rider wasn't exactly protecting
Ashareth's, but that had been in his mind at first. Zith scraped at
the ground with sharp talons. }: He hurt mine. _That_ was wrong. :{

}:And he tried to end yours. Do you know what that means? Yours should
have just walked away. He _must_ walk away. _You_ have to make him
walk away.:{ Her gaze whirled with intensity. }:Zith, you will someday
be the consort of a queen. Yours must learn to lead. :{

}: It means we would both die. I have seen death in his memories and
thoughts. He is angry. Very angry sometimes. But sad and frightened
more, but he does not let me see that much. He hides much and doesn't
let any body see. :{ The bronze seemed troubled, looked up at
Panitath and his tail twitched. }: He does not want to lead. But he
does not want to follow. I can not _make_ him. Mine is very stubborn.
:{

}:I know,:{ her eyes whirled in sympathy. }:They try to protect us
many times, but we must also protect ours from the things they don't
know will hurt them and us more.:{

She shifted her bulk and laid her head on the warm sands of the bowl.
}:Come lay with me Zith,:{ she invited the little bronze with a lift
of her wing. It was a very great honor she rarely shared with bronzes
besides Loseth, Mnoranth, and Yumath. }:Yours will lead when he is
ready. You must help him become ready.:{

Aware of the opportunity, Zith hurried over and settled next to
Panitath in the warm sands. }: Thank you, Panitath. :{ He heaved a
great sigh, relaxing even amidst the irritation that still streamed
from his rider. }: How do I do that? He says often that he is not a
leader, that he doesn't want it. :{

}:Don't talk to him about it, just let him feel your ambition. You
will lead dragons and he is yours, he will learn this.:{ She sighed
heavily. }:Lead your threes, then your sixes and nines. Learn the
drills well. The others will follow you. Show them and yours that
_you_ will lead no matter what he wishes. He will learn that we decide
and he complies. Mine says this many times.:{

Zith considered her statements for a moment. }: We have practiced this
some. I do lead during drills if I am placed in the lead, but it is
hard when my rider will not lead the other riders. :{ He peered at the
bigger gold. }: He does not want to be responsible for others. Just
us. :{

}:You would not have chosen him if he could not learn Zith,:{ she said
confidently. }:I would not have chosen mine if she could not lead.
}:We learned together, she was not always ready. I had to lead her.:{

}: I know this. :{ He replied matter of factly. }: I think Mine will
have to be dragged like a kicking herdbeast. :{

Panitath nosed the little bronze, }:You know how to handle a
heardbeast,:{ she whoofed a dragon chuckle.

**Who _are_ you talking to,** came a question from Cyradis.

}:Zith:{

**Good luck,** the weyrwoman's amusement reflected the gold's.
