}: To the left. No, down a bit. That's it. :{ Zith gave a low croon of
pleasure as J'ackt scrubbed at a particular spot along his wing. }:
Much better. Now higher.{
"If you weren't so fecking big, it wouldn't take so long. " J'ackt
countered out loud, but scrubbed where Zith had indicated, then
slapped his hide. "Get down, you big beast."
Zith quite calmly flicked his tail, sending a wash of water over his
rider. Sputtering, J'ackt wiped his face. "You ass."
L'cor chuckled nearby when he saw the young bronze splash his rider.
He knew of J'ackt's reputation and the events that had recently
transpired. Who in the Weyr hadn't seen him out digging a shaffing
trench for weeks on end. Tonuth surfaced in the lake and emerged
dripping. **don't even think about it.**
}:But you thought it was funny,:{
**Yes, for someone else. I don't want to get any wetter than I am
already. Thank you very much. Besides you'd drown me with that huge
tail of yours.**
"Does he do that often," L'cor asked
J'ackt turned at the voice, about to answer when his gaze fell on
L'cor. He knew who he was of course; shards, everyone did. He was
Corowal's get. His expression immediately closed off. "Yes."
L'cor couldn't miss the change in expression and shook his head
looking away for a moment. Then he picked up his brush and began to
scrub his giant of a lifemate. Ever since Corowal had acknowledged
him, people had reacted to him differently. It wasn't so apparent when
he was a Weyrling because he was normally with his class or the
Weyrling leaders. But ever since he'd graduated he'd received all
sorts of duties, including transportation, that had to be a direct
reflection of who his father was and it irked him.
"Look," he said to J'ackt. "He didn't raise me alright? I'm a by blow,
a second thought."
His head turned to regard L'cor with suspicion and his hand stilled on
Zith as he stared at L'cor. "And?"
L'cor shook his head and chuckled. "Just don't blame me because you
don't like my father."
"Blame you for what?" J'ackt flicked his gaze over his fellow rider.
"Your father is a fecking ass." He tone dripped with dislike for the
Lord Holder. "If anything, I pity you."
"Not long on diplomacy are you?" L'cor grinned. "Aye, he can be, but
only if you get on the wrong side of him. Then, its no holds barred."
He shook his head at the younger rider. "I learned long ago not to
cross him in things that matter. But now with the big guy here on my
side," his hand reached out to Tonuth. "I'm not so dependent on his
good will." L'cor had begun to realize that his own sympathies had
shifted toward the Weyr on the subject of J'ackt. Even if he was a bit
unreasonable and prickly.
"No." J'ackt knew what diplomacy was and he ranked it on the same
level as politics. He stroked Zith's side and swiped at a spot of sand
on the bronze's leg. "Guess I haven't learned not to cross him." He
paused. "And I really don't care to learn." He scrubbed at Zith's leg,
then moved on to the bronze's side, then turned to look at L'cor
again. "You know... I probably stole from you a time or two." He
waited for L'cor's reaction, drumming his fingers on the soft hide
beneath them.
"From what I heard your da wasn't better, I guess we were both just
lucky that way." When he said the part about stealing L'cor remembered
his work as an understeward, and some of the mysterious disappearances
at Green Valley. "So ya bragging or apologizing," he asked with a
grin.
J'ackt had to admit that was true, but at least his father was dead;
L'cor couldn't say the same, unfortunately. His eyes flickered at the
grin and slowly his lips tugged upwards to answer the expression with
a flash of a wry smile. "Oh...bragging. Definitely bragging."
"You," he said grinning and shaking his finger at J'ackt, "are one
sneaky wherry."
