Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr

L'pin had distilled his notes down to a few hides, rather than the
sprawling piles they'd become over the course of this clutch's
weyrlinghood. He carried those tucked under one arm as he reported to
the chamber where the wingleaders were waiting. He wondered who'd
picked out weyrlings for their wing already as they observed the
drilling and the blooding, and who wanted to hear a little more before
making their choices.
"Good morning," N'vanik said. He had his eye on a few riders but was
still undecided.
Sh'del smiled and nodded to a fresh sup of klah just in front of the
empty chair beside him. L'pin looked like he could use a cup.
L'pin took the chair and the drink. He needed it.
Cyradis came in from the direction of her weyr with a sunny smile for
everyone already there. "Good morning," she added to the room in
general and took her seat next to N'vanik. She laid her own notes on
the table in front of her. These meetings were always pleasant though
she didn't always get the riders she wanted. It was a big day when
the Weyrlingmaster handed off a new class to the wings. She gave
Sh'del a nod and special smile for all his hard work.
He nodded back to her and indicated the full cup of hot klah in front
of her. It wasn't like he was normally the klah boy for the group, but
Trouble had decided that she needed to now all about the proddy green
in the weyr next to his at first light this morning, creating a
complete ruckus for him. A lot of apologizing had just about gotten
him off the hook with the green's very upset rider, with the end
result being that he had been up for several candlemarks now. He
really had to do something with that flit.
"Thank you," she smiled and picked up the cup. "So any specific
suggestions from the Weyrling workers?" She looked back and forth
between Sh'del and L'pin.
"Only that J'ackt be held back until he matures a bit more," Sh'del said.
She nodded. She had been expecting that from her own dealings with the
young bronzerider. Hopefully his time with the mindhealers might help
him integrate more and learn how to deal with the people around him.
She hadn't actually had the discussion with N'vanik yet since she knew
he'd probably want the kid in his wing. But she thought his first
assignment would probably be best in the Queen's Wing where he'd gain
some perspective and respect for what the upper wings were dealing
with.
"Then I'd like G'dori if that is good for everyone," she said. "His
green is large and could help us with falling pairs." There, she'd
placed her first card on the table.
D'hol sipped his own much of klah, musing over the sheet in front of
him. "I need a bronze to replace T'nom, but I'm not sure about those
listed." He tapped at the sheet. "But I'll take Alina. I've watched
her during drills and she's good, though she could use more
confidence."
That made one of N'vanik's decisions easier. "Then I'll take Saidrene.
She's smart, works hard, but seems easy-going." He'd been wondering if
Cyradis might want to claim her.
Sh'del made some marks on his paperwork and then shuffled them. "We
have young C'gall, I think he would be a good fit for the queen's
wing. His green is also quite large and she's very fast, but he's
lacking in confidence." He glanced over to Cyradis to see if she
wanted the shy young greenrider. "I think with a bit of encouragement
they'll both make excellent fighters, the boy just needs to get over
the last vestiges of his Hold upbringing." He didn't need to spell out
what that had entailed. But the boy needed a soft touch rather than
being shouted into fighting well.
"What about this Satai?" D'hol eyed the hide in front of him and
skimmed a line. "From what I've seen in drills and just from watching
her with others, I don't think she's ready for the wings at all yet."
He looked up at L'pin and Sh'del with an arched brow. "Are you
planning on graduating the girl?"
Cyradis nodded at Sh'del's comment and wrote the name down on her
list. She noticed that no one had answered D'hol's question and while
the silence grew she figured they hadn't really decided yet about the
girl. But, that left her an opening and she knew the subject would be
touchy with N'vanik and Sh'del especially. "Well just for the future
when he's released. I'd like to see J'ackt in the Queen's wing as a
start. Perhaps his issues can be refocused there where he's not at the
point of the 'fall but Zith would be able to catch anything or anyone
who fell. It could give him an appreciation for foolhardy mistakes up
top." She didn't add that she expected him to be reassigned once he'd
settled in and become a dependable part of her Wing. That was actually
the course and purpose of the Queen's Wing outside of injured and
expecting riders. They were well protected at the lower levels and the
Queens could catch any pair that fell.
N'vanik raised an eyebrow. He wanted J'ackt in his Wing, but it might
be smart to put him in a... less demanding Wing for a while. And he
trusted Cyradis not to try to shout the boy into obedience.
"Interesting idea."
Cyradis half smiled at N'vanik. She wanted J'ackt to succeed almost as
much as he did. Zith was big and powerful and like Loseth could help
his rider adjust. "Alright then, is that everyone?"
L'pin went to address D'hol's hanging question. "Tomorrow's Threadfall
will have the weyrlings drilling in a wing formation. Seeing how R'keh
and Satai do will tell us if they're ready or if they need to stay as
weyrlings for a bit more. But back to the available ones..." He kept
listing names.
