As she wrapped up the wing meeting Cyradis smiled at a couple of new
faces in the group. "I'd like to welcome Oria," she nodded toward the
young woman. "For those who might not of heard. She and L'cor are
expecting fairly soon."
Cyradis clapped along with the light applause and congratulations that
ran around the room.
"I'd also like to congratulate T'fen who will be going back to the
Weyrleaders wing this sevenday. We've appreciated you here in Queens."
she smiled then spread her hands. "I think that is it for today. Have
a nice rest day. We'll have drills at the eighth candlemark day after
tomorrow. Dismissed."
As the other riders got to their feet, Oria stood up slowly, hoping to catch
the eye of the senior goldrider. Once she felt she'd managed it, she asked,
"Might I have a quick word?"
"Of course," Cyradis smiled. "Why don't we go into my office," she
said and led the short way down the hall. "Here we are," she said when
they arrived. "Make yourself comfortable Oria," she smiled and went to
the sideboard for a cool glass of water.
The greenrider slowly got into a seat, her movements showing she was trying
to adjust to the changes happening to her body as the baby grew within.
"It's about this monster," she said, patting her stomach.
"Yes," Cyradis grinned back at the young woman. "I remember the
monster days." She shook her head. "I'd swear Kendran was practicing
water ball some days."
"I think this one is going to be a runner," replied Oria. "But he, or she,
well we decided we'd like to take up L'cor's father's offer to foster them
at Emerald Falls."
Cyradis eyes widened slightly. "Corowal offered to foster the baby?"
"He did," the greenrider said simply. Much as she would have liked to keep
the baby close by, she knew that as a rider she wasn't going to have that
much time. and while most fostermothers she had met were great, there was no
substitute for a loving and caring family. "I think it's because he
couldn't look after L'cor when he was small." Realizing she might have said
too much, she flushed slightly. "That's just my opinion," she said trying to
cover her tracks.
"Of course," Cyradis nodded. "How do you feel about that?" She asked
gently. Not really knowing L'cor she had no idea if he'd teamed up
with his father to bend her to their ideas of how the child would be
raised.
"I want my child to have a family that loves them." Simple words, but ones
that were heartfelt. "My, my mother died when I was small, and my father, he
wasn't interested in me, just my brothers, so I want them to have people
around them who will be there."
"I'm sure it will be Oria," she smiled. "I'll make sure the records
reflect your choice and we'll have a messenger sent to the Hold when
the child is born. How long do you think you'll want to keep the baby
here with you?"
"I don't know yet, L'cor and I haven't finished talking it through," Oria
replied. "At least a month, until the Healers clear us both to go
/between/."
"Thats fine Oria," she nodded. "You take your time and just let
Chaysea what you'll need. We'll care for you and the baby as long as
you need."
The relief Oria felt at finally telling someone must have shown on her face.
While it wasn't unheard of for riders with strong family connections in
halls or holds to send their children back there, it wasn't the usual
practice to do so, most parents wanting their children close at hand. Which
was the talk of the other pregnant riders she saw attending the healers. "I
just think we'd be stupid to not at least try this, if it's too much, then
we'll have to see about finding somewhere here for them."
"Well it's also okay if you change your mind later." She shook her
head. "I think it will be harder to let go than you think right now."
"I don't know, I've never done this before."
Cyraids had of course and she was more than willing to be flexible.
"That's fine," she smiled. "We can play it by ear but I've marked down
your preference and we will just see what you want when the time
comes. How does that sound?"
"That sounds good, thank you," Oria replied, even as a hand drifted over her
gently rounded stomach, as though reassuring it's occupant.
Cyradis nodded. At least she'd cleared the way for Oria to change her
mind should she want to after the baby's birth. Not that she had a
single bad thing to say about it being raised at Emerald Falls. But
she knew a mother's heart and couldn't imagine herself making the same
decision.
"We're probably going to want you to stop flying fall soon. How are
you feeling?"
"Tired," Oria said. "And all I want to eat is salad, but with that really
sticky sweet syrup they put on the cakes."
Cyradis couldn't help but laugh and slap the desk. "I know what you
mean," she said shaking her head. "Poor K'deren," she shook her head.
"I had to have redfruit with everything. Even my mashed tubers had
redfruit relish on top."
"That I could live with," Oria said. "It just tastes odd, but I can't stop
eating it."
Nodding the Weyrwoman smiled. "I'm sure there is something in there
the baby needs." She picked up her notes and leaned on the desk. "But
you remember, if you need anything at all you just need to ask."
