Alina

Alina

Even though S'avn had told Alina he would check in on her when he returned from the rest of sweep duty, he'd been so exhausted by that time that a quick dip in the bathing pools and a bit of dinner had been his only priorities.

So it was at breakfast the next morning before drills that S'avn sought Alina out. It looked as if Saidrene hadn't joined her yet, which S'avn took advantage of by sitting down beside of Alina with his plate of eggs, tubers and ham.

"How's that nose?" he asked.

Alina looked up - through two black eyes. "I look like someone beat me," she said miserably.

S'avn failed miserably at trying to hide his smile. "You could at least make up some great story about how you fought off some horrible fiend to save some orphan children."

The greenrider snorted. "Yeah, right. People are more likely to believe that I walked into a pair of doors than that I got into a fist fight." She shook her head carefully. "And I'm grounded for now because I can't breathe through my nose. How's that for luck?"

S'avn imagined that it would not do well for the greenrider to try to fly in high altitudes with her sinus so messed up. "Well, on the bright side, that earns you a few days off from drills. That's a plus." He tore off a pinch of the ham on his plate and popped it in his mouth.

"I guess. But I think I'll just go die of embarrassment in my weyr instead." She sighed, then glanced at S'avn. "Did D'hol say anything to you?"

"No, just his typical grunt." S'avn raised his shoulders a bit, and then turned his eyes back to Alina's face. "You know, the bruising isn't so bad, it uh, really brings out the color of your eyes."

"Nice try," she muttered. Black rings around brown eyes-- as far as she was concerned, her face looked like a mud pit. "At least she didn't break my nose. _That_ would have been awful."

"Yes, I'm imagining Weyr gossip will somehow twist your blackened eyes into something that is my fault. You know that S'avn, can't go anywhere with him." He grinned, trying to lighten her spirits a bit.

"Oh. _Oh_." Alina sat back in her chair, suddenly worried about J'ackt. He had been concerned after her Flight, and if he heard that S'avn _had_ actually hit her... **Except nobody gossips with J'ackt,** she remember with relief. "Oh-- well, at least you're being talked about?" she offered with a smile.

S'avn laughed. "Yes, _that's_ what I want to be known for around the Weyr." He thought about her reaction, and then asked. "Was there something else you were worried about? You got all wide-eyed there for a minute."

"Um..." The greenrider toyed with her fork for a moment as she debated whether to say anything. J'ackt was already in so much trouble... and he didn't need people to pick on him before he'd even done anything. "Well, no. Just some of my friends can... I have some nosy friends," she finished, a bit lamely.

Nosy friends, huh. "I've only ever seen you with about two people around here, Saidrene," he looked up as if expecting to see the greenrider in the Dining Cavern, "or that J'ackt guy." Even though he didn't know J'ackt personally it was hard not to know the guy's name, not when there was a soddin' song about him and everything. S'avn got the distinct impression that the kid was a troubled brat, but he kept his opinion to himself.

Alina gave him a sharp look. "You watch who I sit with in the Dining Cavern?"

S'avn gave her a deadpan look. "Yes, I keep a special little diary all about you. I take great care in accurately recording with whom you eat."

She snorted. "The _most_ boring diary ever. I mean, if you wanted to keep a special diary, you should start recording someone like-- like Kapera instead. _Then_ you'd have something worth writing about!"

"You know, everyone talks about Kapera's reputation but she's been pretty... boring, really, since she's been here at Dolphin Cove. I was expecting something a bit more dramatic with the way everyone goes on about it." S'avn shrugged and bit into a piece of toast. "I mean, I thought she'd be streaking around the Weyr or something, but at most she walks around with J'nus."

"And she's so pretty, she could literally have any man in the Weyr. Except then she chooses some old guy?" Alina wrinkled her nose, then winced. "Ow."

S'avn winced in sympathy. "I hope you don't have to sneeze."

"Me too." Alina sighed and looked down at her empty plate. "Well... I should probably go back to the Healers now. They wanted me to check back in this morning."

The bluerider nodded and stood himself, "I've got to get to drills, too. Good luck with the healers."

"Thanks. And thanks for checking up on me."

"Of course. That's what friends are for." And he hoped at least they could call themselves that.
