Cortana

Cortana

The storm had driven most people into the comfort of
their weyrs. Cortana stood looking out at the rain, lost
in empty thought when she felt something brush past
her shoulder. Seeking the source, she noticed a letter
laying on the ground. With a roll of her eyes, Cortana
picked up the letter and took it back to the table where
it had been sitting for the past few days. She laid it
down then returned to her spot and resumed her
chosen activity.

It was not long before the letter once again fell to the
floor at her feet. This had been an ongoing occurrence
since the initial time her little green flit, Trill, first
delivered this letter. Trill was annoyed that Cortana
had yet to read it after she had dutifully brought it to
her. This jejune game had gone on for sometime. With
the storm driving them all inside the uninterrupted time
had provided Trill the opportunity to demonstrate her
persistence ad nauseum.

This time Cortana decided she would try a new tactic
and simply leave it laying on the floor. Not the wisest
course of action as Trill took to flying around her head c
hittering her annoyance.

"For the love of little green dragons!" Cortana exclaimed in
exasperation. Anath lifted her head slightly at her lifemate's
outburst then gently laid it back down, but kept an eye on her.

Cortana picked up the letter and marched over to a chair.
Dropping into the seat while opening it up Cortana asked
Trill, "Happy?" Trill responded with a pretentious chirp then
settled herself triumphantly on Anath's back.

Plainly, this was something that Cortana had been avoiding.
The letter, from her sister, contained news from home. News
from home always included news about her father. News
of her father was not something she looked forward to as
she despised her father. In reading the letter it was as
anticipated; general updates of the comings and goings and
daily life back home. Her sister was an invariable gossip. So
her letters always included any juicy details she collected in
between her correspondences.

At last Cortana reached the portion of the lettered dedicated to
news of her father. Her twin sister was the apple of their father's
eye. So most letters were filled with injudicious praise. As she
begrudgingly read the lines, Cortana began to lean forward, her
attention piking. What was undoubtedly disturbing and distressing
news for her beloved sister had Cortana feeling jovial. Cortana
read and reread the paragraph with an fiendish grin.

With a little chuckle she stowed the letter away, then returned to
her original place to look once more upon the drizzling rain with
a delighted glint in her sea green eyes. "What a beautiful day!"
