The bluerider grabbed a piece of the herdbeast roast and then some of
the salad. Walking over to the table, he sat down next to one of his
wingmates. Lifting his head, he nodded to Aishara. Remembering
previous conversations and how she'd been looking a bit down lately,
he tried to lighten the mood. "So, been on any good rides lately?"
Aishara shrugged a bit before answering. "I've been doing sweeps along
the rivers of Emerald Falls Hold, looking for that missing riverboat.
Wouldn't call that good." She had to push herself to socialize these days.
Hearing a bit of a get-lost tone in her voice, he persevered in true
bluerider fashion. "Ah well bit of a weird thing-that. I mean how can
an entire riverboat disappear like that? Sounds odd. You said your
father was still at the Hold, right? What does he think about all
that?" E'rae had been holdbred so he could understand how they might
feel about the issues that had come about recently. Still, the Weyr
was already talking about how they thought the Hold had done this
deliberately. Being angry was one thing-not tithing was another.
"Yes, and he thinks it's strange too. Although you could hide it from
air under the trees. There are areas where big trees kind of lean over
the River. My father and his men are riding along the banks, but it's
slow and there's shardingly lot of rivers to cover," Aishara replied
with more interest now.
"So those of you riding sweeps haven't seen anything yet either? Well
that's no good." He looked down at his food, thinking. "Might make
sense to clear the land on the sides of the river then. It would give
them lumber to sell and would make it easier to spot any activity on
the river from above for sweeps." E'rae thought of how much of a job
that would be-definitely an undertaking. Still, if it was needed for
peoples' safety it would be worth it.
"Feel free to sell the idea to the Holders," Aishara didn't sound
very optimistic. "At least the landscape is more varied than scouting
over the ocean. Hasn't there been an unusual lot of missing people
lately?" She hadn't forgotten the sweeps they had done while looking
for Lord Zathris.
"Aye, some at sea and some on the river. Sounds like we need to stay
away from water." Shrugging his shoulders, he had been glad of the
respite from normal sweeps. At least it was some sort of excitement
besides looking for signal fires, thread burrows, and other things. "I
hear you've been missing from the last two wing parties. What's got
you disappearing? Found a nice private swimming hole I should know
about?"
That question made her mood sink again. "No, I just haven't felt like
partying," she said with a subdued tone.
"And why is that? You been sick?" He didn't think so from what he'd
seen but then again females had different ailments than men so one
never knew. "Because everyone should feel like partying when there's a
party."
"Just..not been up to it," Aishara sighed. She was not going to tell
him about her broken heart. It was no one's business but hers.
"Hm." That wasn't really like her, but he accepted it. "Well what do
I need to do to get you up to it?" His tone was light-hearted but
there was a well-intentioned smile behind it. Up until recently he
had been hurting for so long. It was hard to see it in others without
wanting to reach out, not thinking about it. And he understood what
it felt like to be isolated. If it hadn't been for K'mai and Leith, he
didn't know where he'd be.
"I don't know," Aishara replied. How did people get over a broken
heart? She never been in this situation before, she had no previous
experience to draw from. "I need distraction."
"What sort of distraction?" He could be good at those, depending on
what she wanted to do. "Trip to somewhere or a new activity? I've
started learning how to surf actually."
"I don't know. Something new. Getting out of the Weyr wouldn't hurt,"
Aishara replied.
"Okay this restday meet me on my ledge. Bring clothes for the water,
but also a shirt. I'll take care of the rest. Say after midday meal?"
He had to take care of some things in the early morning he'd been
neglecting like his mending and putting some clothes away that had
come back from the laundry. Then he'd have a bit of time to organize
and pack what they would need. Realizing he had pretty much finished
his food, he waited for her answer.
"Okay, I'll be there," Aishara promised. For the first time in
sevendays, she actually felt she had something to wait for besides yet
another dreary morning and evening to cry herself to sleep.
