J'darin

J'darin

The Hatching had almost made him forget how angry he was at his Weyrlingmaster. But, a few days had passed since then, they had flown Thread, and wound up with several scorings. He was sure that was because people had been out too late the night before, but nonetheless, he was forcibly reminded how badly the needed new Riders to fill the gaps. And a bluerider just .. well it wasn't RIGHT.

Perhaps now able to keep his temper, or so he thought, he went looking for Y'sani. The rumours of J'darin's feelings on the matter had reached Y'sani, but he decided to fight _that_ battle at a time and place of the Weyrleader's chosing. He had plenty to do in the meantime, with a fine new weyrling group to be settled into their new lives. When J'darin finally found him, he was outside watching the sun rise and taking advantage of his early morning quiet to stretch. His body was starting to remind him that he was a few turns away from fifty, but he figured that he could keep old age at bay by sheer force of will for another twenty turns at least. J'darin was younger than his Weyrlingmaster by a few turns, but that took nothing away from the anger and command that fairly crackled around him.
He, and his dragon, had taken to being Weyrleaders as he and Hasaarth had always expected they would. He paused for a moment and gathered his thoughts as he watched Y'sani from a few paces away. The man was aware of him no doubt. Finally he said softly, but bitingly, "I expected better of you, Y'sani." "And I expected you to want what was best for your Weyr," Y'sani replied without looking up. "I suppose we're both disappointed."

J'darin crossed his arms and didn't even flinch. His voice, if anything, became colder. "You have yet to prove to me that flying in the face of hundreds of turns of traditions is _good_ for _my_ Weyr.
Tradition is the only reason I didn't remove you from your position when you appointed a blue for a 'Second without even mentioning your choice to me first."

"Y'sani, he cannot be _capable_ of all he should be. Why do you not see that? And you should have at least talked to me first if this is so _good_
for the Weyr." Y'sani finally stopped, turning to face J'darin. "I've known L'pin for over twenty turns. Perhaps I might be a better judge of what he is _capable_
of than you are. I certainly hope you're not implying I would disregard my responsibility to the weyrlings..." His voice trailed off ominously.

"I would not have expected so, Y'sani." He met the man glare for glare.
"You should have at least mentioned your choice to me, Weyrlingmaster.
Blueriders don't become Wingseconds for a reason, and this is unusual, even for a Weyrlingmaster with a free hand." J'darin paused, gathering his thoughts.

"I am not certain either way on your choice, Y'sani. And I will wait to see how he fares. But remember that you are here by _my_ choice. If my Weyrlings do not suffer and you do the job you have said you can do, then there will be no problem. Simple." "These aren't usual times," Y'sani replied in a deceptivly calm voice.
"Your Weyr hardly has enough bronzeriders and brownriders to meet Thread, and L'pin has twenty turns of experience working with weyrlings. If you're mad that I didn't tell you that I was appointing a 'second, than I apologize.
But if you're mad because of the color of his dragon's hide, then you're not half the leader I thought you were."

"Had you appointed a bronze or a brownrider to the position, I would have expected at least a courtesy note telling me so, but would be less angry than I am now. As I've already said, let him do the job. I can only wait and see, like the rest of the Weyr. You may think what you like of me, Y'sani. I care little except for the safety of every dragon and rider in this Weyr, and that includes your L'pin." Y'sani smiled, though it certainly didn't hide the hint of agression left in his eyes. "In that case, neither of us have anything to worry about.
You'll see soon enough that I've done what is best for the Weyr."

"Despite what you think my reasons are, Weyrlingmaster, I truly hope you have done what is best. I truly hope." He had nothing further to say to a man whom he once thought would become a friend, and so turned and left, feeling almost like he was out in Thread with no shelter.
