N'vanik

N'vanik

L'pin shook his head as he looked over the large stack of notes that a
graduating weyrling class always seemed to produce. It seemed like
only a few sevendays ago that Loseth and Panitath had produced this
clutch - how could they already be ready to graduate? They all seemed
like such children…

There always felt like too much to carry on his own, so he'd borrowed
some wooden carrying baskets from the storage caverns and filled
those. He'd also borrowed a weyrling (one too young to formally
graduate) who would help him carry them towards the area of the Weyr
where the Weyrleaders had offices and meeting rooms. Now he was just
waiting for N'vanik and anyone else the Weyrleader wanted there at the
meeting to be ready.

Chaneth reached out to Loseth. }:My rider has many hides and is ready
to discuss the weyrlings when yours is free.:{

}:He's on his way.:{

A moment later N'vanik appeared. "So, last report before we make the
assignments." He settled into a chair. The final decisions would be
made with Sh'del and the other wingleaders.

"I hope you and Loseth are well. Is he excited for new additions?"
L'pin started off. "Sorry for all of the hides," he added.

N'vanik glanced at the large pile. "Don't worry about it. And Loseth
is always excited when his hatchlings grow up and can join us."

"This has been an excellent class. I'm truly pleased with the way
they've developed," L'pin said. "I've sorted them out by strengths and
weaknesses and I don't think any will need to be held back, except for
T'rels who won't turn 16 for another 4 months."

N'vanik nodded. "A'vel still doing good?" he asked with a little
smile. L'pin was well aware the Weyrleader had a favorite.

"He was impressive in a catch drill earlier, actually," L'pin said.
"Quick thinking on Tsogath's part. I think they'll do well in any
wing."

N'vanik's smile widened. "Good, because they're coming to mine." It
wasn't purely favoritism. A'vel had proven to be a hard working,
disciplined rider and N'vanik needed more greens in his wing.

"He's a bit nervous about the upcoming Blooding, but I can see your
confidence in choosing him bolstering him," the Third advised. "Anyone
else you have a special eye on besides him?" L'pin asked.

"We should be thoughtful in where we place R'nar and Rondera." N'vanik
tapped a finger on the table. "I can take Rondera. I think she's got
potential and I still need a few more greens. And I'll see if D'hol
would like R'nar for Cyclone. They could use another bronze or two."

"I was actually thinking R'nar for Cyclone. I think he would get along
well under D'hol's style. But S'grel has a nervous termperament and
might do less well under him. Do you know if Cyradis has any
preferences in color?"

"I'll check with her, but I think she could use a larger blue or a
brown to even out the wing strength."

S'grel had a large blue, so that might work out. "I'll earmark a few
likely ones then, but of course the final decision is up to you both."
L'pin paused and considered. "I think Doria would be good in Cyclone
as well."

"Hmm, really? You don't think D'hol will be too much for her?" His
instinct was to protect the shy girl from D'hol.

"He might be," L'pin conceded. "Do you think you or Cyradis would
rather have her? I could suggest T'vari and Galyia for his wing
instead." They were both weyrbred and unimpressed by overbearing
types.

N'vanik stared at the table for a moment, considering. "I'll talk to
Cyradis about Doria, try to figure out the best fit for her. I agree
on suggesting T'vari and Galyia." He wasn't very familiar with those
two weyrlings and trusted L'pin's judgment on them.

L'pin went through a few more weyrlings. As he looked at the name of a
brownrider who had hailed from Emerald Falls, "I've got another
question, if I can have a minute,"

"Sure."

"How's the political situation with Emerald Falls and the other Holds?
I heard something about the tithes being bad, and I wondered if
something was going on."

N'vanik's nose wrinkled. "Well, we're looking into it. Might be a
coincidence, but it seems a little convenient." If he found out the
Hold had sent bad produce deliberately, they'd regret it.

"I hope it's only an accident," L'pin said. "I ask because there's
been some bitter talk by weyrfolk about holders. A couple of our
weyrlings are holdbred and specifically from Emerald Falls, so I'm
worried about their emotional state if relationships are going bad.
They should be proud to graduate and protect their homes, and not be
worrying if things will fall apart."

"I feel bad for them, but if this is deliberate... well, actions have
consequences." They couldn't let the holders neglect their duty to
provide for the Weyr.

"I understand. I was just thinking that you might want to not send the
Falls-born ones alone on sweeps or searches to the hold. Send them
paired with someone else, so they don't get cornered."

"Hmm, good idea. I'll match them with someone older, preferably weyrbred."

"I think that will work. Thank you," L'pin said, pleased it had been
considered. "I think the only other two we have to assign are T'chail
and Saeris."

N'vanik thought back to the updates L'pin had given him on those
weyrlings. "I might take T'chail. Seems like a steady kid, but not too
serious. And maybe Saeris to Cyclone."

"Sounds good. That's all of them sorted out, then."

"Thanks L'pin."
