C'rin

C'rin felt like he had on his first day out of the Weyrling Wing and into his fighting Wing at River Bluff. He didn't know any of the Dolphin Cove riders that would be his wingmates, and he felt added pressure since he was to be joining the Weyrleader's Wing. A part of C'rin wanted to show these Dolphin Cove riders that the River Bluff dragonmen could keep up and fly just as well as any Dolphin Cove man.

}:It's not a competition, is it? We all fly Thread together.:{ Dasveth did not understand his rider's feelings. There were none of those feelings among the dragons.

**It's different with humans,** C'rin tried to explain, **they might think they're better than we are.**

}:We are a good team. They will see it.:{ Dasveth said with confidence that C'rin didn't feel.

They arrived at the practice grounds where the rest of Hurricane Wing was gathering. **Here goes...**

~*~

The practice was a light one, just enough to introduce the River Bluff riders to the Wing, and try out a few different formations so riders could be placed into positions suitable for their talents.

"Hey! River Bluff!" a voice behind him called as he was walking away from the practice field.

Turning around, C'rin found a greenrider walking toward him, a long, black braid of hair dangled over her shoulder.

"Yeah?"

"Wait up!" Saidrene hated the grass on the practice fields, sometimes it was knee-high and hard to trudge through. Sane people left on their dragons, but Ashareth was already off in the weyrlake, leaving Saidrene to walk.

"Saidrene," she said, sticking her hand out to the new brownrider.

"C'rin," he took her hand, automatically wondering what she wanted with him.

"Welcome to the Wing," Saidrene said, falling in to step with her new wingmate.

"Thanks. Hopefully I won't muck it up too much," C'rin said with a little grin.

"Please, if H'gar can hack it in the Weyrleader's Wing then anyone can, and if you don't know which one H'gar is you will soon." Saidrene laughed.

C'rin liked this greenrider's manner, she was welcoming, and he guessed by just looking at her, that she was near him in age. "How old are you? We have to be close in age."

"Eighteen, I Impressed Ashareth almost two Turns ago now. There's two groups in our Wing, the old and the young. There's me, A'vel, Pierka, A'dryn, Ciendra, L'cor and Rondera, who are all between sixteen and twenty, and then there's the rest of the Wing... and they're... older than twenty." Saidrene grinned a little, and then leaned in to tease C'rin, "But I think I can get you into our group."

"Then I am lucky to have met you," C'rin laughed, holding out his hand to help Saidrene hop over a rough patch of ground.

Saidrene took his hand, "And a gentlemen too! River Bluff, you'll have all the girls swooning around here in no time." As they transitioned onto smoother ground nearing the Weyrbowl, Saidrene moved her hand to his elbow, linking their arms together.

"Oh, not me, I'm too quiet and not at all exciting." C'rin said, as he realized that Saidrene was steering him toward the Dining Cavern.

"That makes you even more exotic. There's enough flashy bronzeriders running around thinking they're Faranth's gift to women." Saidrene rolled her eyes, and then shot them back at C'rin playfully. "I hear brownriders are the flavor of the season."

C'rin shook his head, finding himself smiling again, "You are determined to see me blush, aren't you?"

"That depends, do you blush?"

"No, I'm weyrbred, so it will take more than innuendos for that."

Saidrene lifted her eyebrows, "I'm weyrbred too. My mother is the Weyrwoman at Dragonsfall."

C'rin snapped his fingers, "That's why you look familiar. Saibra is your mother."

"Bingo." Saidrene said as they walked into the Cavern, which was a cool reprieve from the heat outside. Inside the Dining Cavern was teaming with people that were milling about, some standing in the service line, and others just trying to find a place to sit.

"So how does a weyrbred dragonrider turn out so quiet and not exciting?" Saidrene asked once she and C'rin were seated with some lunch between them.

C'rin lifted his shoulders a bit, not intending to blab about his past, but finding himself telling Saidrene things he hadn't talked about to anyone, "Well, my dad is a brownrider, my mother is a greenrider. My dad is the epitome of what people typically say about brownriders being steady, and trustworthy and blah blah blah..." He waved his hand. "He's serious, and quiet, and withdrawn. So, I guess I just got some of that too. I'm not quite as serious or withdrawn as my father, but I'm not out to be the center of attention either."

Saidrene nodded, chewing on a meat roll. "I get that. My father was a brownrider, he died when I was eight, but I can still remember the kind of person that he was. He was loyal, and while she was with him, so was my mother."

"Ah, brownriders, the color everyone wants to settle with, but not the color that drives women crazy." C'rin said, raising his glass in a mock toast.

"Hey, at least you're realistic about your standing," Saidrene teased, raising her cup to match his toast.

"Ouch," C'rin hissed, touching his chest as if it had hurt.

}:You promised me a bath.:{ Ashareth poked into Saidrene's thoughts.

**Just a moment, my love.**

"Dragon calling?" C'rin said, recognizing that look in Saidrene's eyes as the one that all dragonriders got when they were talking to their other half.

"Yes, I promised a bath, and a bath she _will_ get, if she has to drag me down to the weyrlake." Saidrene's tone was dry, but it was never a chore when it came to Ashareth.

"It was nice talking to you," Saidrene said, as she stood to leave.

"Hey, Saidrene," C'rin said, reaching out a hand to stop her for a moment, "thank you for the welcome."

"Oh, the welcome isn't over yet," Saidrene promised, a gleam in her eyes, "I'll be seeing you around, River Bluff."
