Description: Cosani makes sure that Threadfall goes well.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 7 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: D'hol, E'ron
Cosani glanced around her as she fed more firestone to Shalith. Things
were going well, no major injuries and the wind was minimal. When
Shalith had enough, Cosani secured the sack and made sure they were
still in the correct position.
It was one of those clear, hot days with a light haze masking the
horizon. The wind was light and crackdust hovered thick in the air.
Above the Wings, the Red Star glowed ominously as it rained Thread
down on the planet below. The Thread drifted listlessly through the
atmosphere, tangling here and there into larger clots before they were
seared into nothing by dragonbreath.
In the five to Cosani's right, Alina squinted beneath her goggles as
Imarith belched flame. The heat of it licked at her cheeks and she was
grateful for her helmet. **Watch right,** she told her dragon, but
Imarith had already spied the clump through Alina's eyes and was
moving to char it.
The wind gusted fitfully, sending crackdust back at Alina and Imarith
and clouding their air. Imarith's flame sputtered and she turned her
head to receive more firestone.
A dragon cried out in surprise and pain. Cosani tensed and glanced
over just as the blue winked /between/. A moment later Shalith told
her }:Balofith is fine. It was only a light 'Scoring.:{ Depending on
how light, the pair might be back shortly but in the meantime the Wing
shifted to cover the space they'd left.
Alina and Imarith drifted left in their formation to cover for
Balofith and his rider, closer to where Cosani and Shalith flew. They
slipped sideways through the air as Imarith turned her head to flame
the Thread that had 'Scored their Wingmate. Alina coughed as she got
another face full of crackdust and Imarith drifted a bit out of
position to chase a bit of errant Thread that drifted a little out of
reach. The green dragon belched flame until she was out, then turned
to her rider for more firestone as the charred bit of Thread fell
toward them... only not all of it was burnt.
Cosani spotted the silver flashing amid the blackened clump with
Imarith and Alina directly in the path. **There!** With the instant
communication of joined minds, Shalith was moving in the next second.
Turning almost onto her side she pumped her wings hard and shot upward
to flame the still-living mass. It was nothing more than ash when it
floated down onto Imarith's hide. Cosani let out a relieved breath.
Imarith and Alina flinched as Shalith's flame seared the air right
next to them. Alina felt the heat of it sear her face. She fumbled her
firestone and a large chunk of it fell from her fingers and
disappeared into the air below. **What was that?!**
}:I must not have got all the Thread,:{ Imarith said sheepishly.
}:Shalith noticed.:{
Alina lifted her hand in thanks to Cosani. Her heart pounded against
her ribs. **Hopefully Yumath and D'hol didn't.**
Cosani waved in return and Shalith moved back into position just in
time to char a small clump of Thread. **Good job love.** She patted
the green hide.

After Threadfall was over, Alina couldn't stop thinking about her near
miss. She bathed her dragon with a new appreciation for her even green
hide and wondered at her own lack of scars as she scrubbed crackdust
from her skin in the bathing caverns. It had been so close. She hadn't
seen it. What if, what if, what if...
It was easy enough to score a bottle of wine from the lower caverns.
After that, it was just a matter of tracking Cosani down. Alina found
her in the dining cavern, about to tuck into a plate of food. "Mind if
I join you?" Alina asked.
"Oh." Cosani looked up in surprise. She and Alina were wingmates and
casually interacted on a regular basis but they weren't really
_friends_ so this was unexpected. "No, go ahead." She supposed a
little company wouldn't be bad... especially now that Meledei was
gone.
Alina sat down across from Cosani and set the wine bottle between them
with a thump. "I just wanted to say thank you. For saving me and
Imarith today."
Cosani looked at the bottle and the corner of her mouth turned up.
"You say thank you with wine. I should save you more often."
"Hopefully you won't have to." The greenrider stared at the tabletop
rather than meeting Cosani's eyes. "That was really careless of me."
Cosani's brows drew down in a scowl and she did her best to mimic
D'hol's voice, "Everyone must be perfect at all times or the entire
Wing will die a horrible death."
"Ha! Exactly!" Cosani's impression surprised a laugh out of Alina.
"I'm _so_ grateful that D'hol and Yumath didn't seem to notice.
Otherwise I'd be stuck doing extra drills with D'hol again." She
shuddered dramatically. "I don't think I could handle that."
"Ugh, he's been _awful_ since his weyrmate left him." Normally D'hol's
strict discipline didn't bother Cosani.
"I know! Like chewing out E'ron just because he dropped a sack in
practice. Everyone misses catches sometimes! It's unfair."
Cosani opened the wine and started to pour. "Well if he didn't notice,
_I'm_ not going tell him." Even if it would make herself and Shalith
look good.
Alina smiled. "Thank you. And thank you for today, again. Imarith and
I appreciate what you did."
Cosani poured a second glass and pushed it ward Alina. "And I
appreciate this wine." She took a generous sip, beaming on the inside.
**We did good.**
}:We did very well,:{ Shalith sounded smug too.
