K'sedel

K'sedel

Chaneth had told L'pin when Panitath moved to the Sands and the clutching
began. He'd been in the middle of a class with a few of Anaeryth's green and
blue weyrlings at the time, so he'd kept going with that, knowing that
clutching took awhile.

It was a little bit later, after class was over and L'pin was retreating to
the Weyrlingstaff area to write reports, that Chaneth interrupted him.

}:Panitath has laid a gold egg.:{

**What?** he thought. What a surprise, and a good omen. Instead of going to
his own door, he changed course slightly and knocked on the Weyrlingmaster's
door. He was curious what K'sedel would think about this.

"Come!" called out the Weyrlingmaster. The news was slowly spreading, and it
wouldn't take a genius to work out exactly what it was that people were
likely want to talk to him about.

L'pin stepped inside the Weyrlingmaster's office. He shut the door behind
him, and then offered the small bag of cookies he had in his hands.

"I figured you wouldn't mind me dropping in to talk about changes in lesson
plans, given the good news from Panitath," the bluerider said cheerfully.

"So long as you don't tell Ciara I was snacking on those, we can talk about
lessons all you like," joked K'sedel as he pointed to a chair.

"I won't breathe a word," L'pin promised as he pushed the bag across the
table. They'd only been working together a month and a half now, and L'pin
found that he had a warmer, more collegial relationship with K'sedel then he
had with some people who'd been in that position.

"I imagine the girls are going to be very excited about the news. Some of the
boys who want to Impress bronze might be jockeying for their favor."

"While those boys who know their dragons will be blue or green may feel left
out, I think we're going to need special classes for all of them." K'sedel
reached for a slate to take some notes. "I think we need to reinforce the
'all dragons are special' lecture a few times."

"I'll be happy to work with the blue and green-inclined boys and to talk up
the value of blues," L'pin agreed. "Pointing out how valuable those colors
are in helping cover the larger metallics might be a good start. I wonder if
one of the wings, maybe the Queen's Wing, would do a closer to the ground
drill so the candidates could watch how each dragon type plays a role?"

"Good idea," K'sedel noted it down. "I think we also need to run some
teamwork excercises, to get them to realise how much they have to rely on
each other, which will help them with that."

"Do you have any ideas in mind. Like three-legged races?" L'pin joked, even
though those were more the province of Gather tricks.

"No, something a little more fun for them. I was thinking we divide them
into teams, and set them a few tasks to do, and then report back to us.
We'll have people watching them, and then the team that wins gets some sort
of treat."

"That sounds interesting. How to set up the teams will be interesting. I
think we should break up some people who work together often," L'pin
suggested.

"They could draw lots, or we could do it for them," K'sedel said thinking
aloud. "And we'd need to alert the appropriate people, based on the tasks we
set."

"I'd rather us doing it so we make sure there's a balance of the kinds of
skills we want. Lots have a chance of making a team heavy on brawn, or on
uncooperative loners." It sounded like a good thing J'ackt was out of
weyrlinghood.

"Then we just need to think of some tasks for them to do. I was wondering
if we could perhaps get the cooperation of the Headwoman and her staff; the
first thing that comes to mind is to get them to plan and serve a fancy
dessert, the winning team will have served the most portions?"

"So it's a challenge of if they can figure out who has the right skills
and then support them. I like it."

"Exactly," K'sedel nodded. "And we can decide who the team leaders are,
just to surprise them a little."

"You have a devious mind," L'pin said cheerfully.

"Comes with the job," K'sedel said as he finally reached for a cookie.
"Now, do you want to tell the headwoman, or shall I?"

"I'd be happy to. She might be less mad if it came from me," he said
with a wink.

"I bet," said K'sedel in a teasing tone. "Now, what else can we plan?"
