Characters: L'pin, Sh'del
Description: L'pin, Sh'del
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 3 of Turn 9

Knowing that Sh'del was probably keeping up on it via his dragon, but
that he'd likely want more detail, L'pin had assembled a report on how
Anaeryth's weyrlings were doing. He tucked it under his arm and showed
up at Sh'del's door with some klah and small sandwiches.

"It's L'pin," he called as he knocked.

"Come in," Sh'del shouted. Not that he was allowed to get up and open
the door himself. Tiny Trouble took to the air and went /between/
popping out almost over L'pin's head.

L'pin let himself in and set the tray on a table. "The kitchens sent
this up with me," he said. "How are you feeling today?"

"Bored." Sh'del heaved a big sigh. "I don't know if this bed rest will
work but if it doesn't then..." He left the treat hanging in the air.
Before he could say anything more, Trouble landed right in the tray,
scattering food over the bed.

"Are you still in a lot of still in pain?" L'pin asked.

"No, I don't even need numbweed anymore." The pain had gone away
almost as soon as Sh'del had taken to bedrest, though he wouldn't
admit that the healer might have been right. As he picked the food
back up and put it neatly on the tray, he asked, "So have we gotten
very many of the River Buff weyrlings?"

"Apparently their one class was scheduled to graduate the last
sevenday of month 12, so the Weyrleader graduated them and split them
into wings.
So they've come over as wingriders," L'pin reported.

"We did get a few who were too young to be wingriders and will stay in
the weyrling wing with us. Those all came over with weyr family
members who transferred," he added.

"Ah, that's something at least. Are the young ones okay though? Do
they need the healers?"

"There's a fourteen-Turn-old who lost his father in the accident and
came over with an aunt. He's going to be speaking to the mindhealers.
Chaneth's keeping an eye on his brown Linath."

Sh'del's brow furled with concern. "Just how are the riders from River
Buff? Have they said much?"

"What do you mean?" L'pin asked.

"About the tsunami and the earthquake, and losing their queen." Out in
his weyr, Loranth crooned a high distressed sound. Sh'del paused and
mentally soothed his brown before addressing L'pin again. "Have many
needed the use of the mindhealer?" he asked in a low voice. Trouble
echoed Loranth's croon in her high pitched warbly voice.
Absentmindedly Sh'del reached out and rubbed her headknobs until she
relaxed.

"We got in five who were too young for the wings, and just two have
been to the mindhealer."

"That's good. Hopefully I'll be back soon to help you guys." Sh'del
glared at his broken leg. "You'd think after all this time I could get
around a green weyrling, eh?" He caught L'pin's eye and chuckled,
desite himself. Served him right to be laughed at.

"Weyrlings are tricky and sneak up on you, looking for any sign of
weakness in their teacher, so they can strike," L'pin said with a
straight face, as if he was reciting from a Harper's Guide to Animals
of Pern.

"Ha!" Sh'del thumped L'pin on the shoulder. "Good one, why don't you
reach behind you and we can toast to the wiliness of our dear green
weyrling for being the most clever in her clutch to figure out a way
to get out of lessons."

"And she was back in them a couple days later. Some plan," L'pin said
as he raised the glass up in a toast.

"Have you noticed how glowing Panitath is?" he mentioned.

"More hatchlings for us to abuse?" Sh'del chuckled as he lifted his
glass to the rather air-headed little green.

"I just like to lay a few marks on the outcome. At this point I won't
bet against Loseth winning, but betting on the color proportions is
fun. As well as predicting which Candidates will Impress before they
age out." He didn't care much about the marks but he loved hearing
other people's opinions and the naticipation.

"You go bet then mate, I'm not going to try to predict the outcome."
Sh'del clasped L'pin by the shoulder and gave it a squeeze. "I just
hope who ever wins begets more blues and browns, we could use a few
more. And maybe a few more greens, we seem to have a boatload of good
future green riders going wanting right now."

"Do you have any in mind?" L'pin asked curiously. "There's a few
Candidates I'm hoping Impress this round before they're too old."

"Yeah, I was thinking of the three twenty one turn old boys, you know
the ones who sit at the back, they're all Holder-bred and they all
would make great riders. I was always thinking two for green and that
tall Gereld for brown. And those four girls we got some time ago from
a search at the Harper Hall, they'd all make strong green rides. What
do you think?"

"Were you thinking Ilmarin for green? I was thinking him for brown or
bronze," L'pin said. "I've also got hopes for Tanaris, Retikilt,
Vatirel, and Tyselin. They've all been trying for awhile."
