"Congratulations, Cyradis. That gold egg is gorgeous." Lanniya's
steps were light as she walked into Cyradis' office. "You must be
thrilled."
The Weyrwoman smiled at her young goldrider. "Thank you Lanniya," she
said. "We're very happy."
Lanniya's smile remained bright, but she shifted on her feet. "I'm
glad." She seemed to bounce on her toes for a moment before taking a
deep breath. "Is that why you wanted to talk to me? About the new
goldrider? Cause I can help train and all that, but I figured you'd
want Kapera for that."
"Thank you," Cyradis smiled and waved toward the chair. "Want some
klah or juice," she asked rising from her seat to grab a cup for the
younger woman. "Are you making plans with your young man yet," she
asked with a wink.
"Juice please." Lanniya sat, curling her feet under her as was her
habit. Her smile widened as she glanced down at the ring she wore.
"Hmm..Nothing new just yet. We're trying to decide when he'll request
a transfer here."
Cyradis brought the requested juice back over to the desk, then
wrapped her hands around her mug and hitched up a leg underneath her
as she sat in her chair.
"I've been thinking about that since the clutching and so I thought
we'd talk." She took a sip of her klah and smiled. Sometimes there
were just good teaching moments and she couldn't pass this one up. "At
some point in your career Lanniya, you're going to be the one who has
to think things through an make decisions. So I'm going to give you
some facts, and you can tell me what you'd do. Does that sound fair?"
Lanniya tilted her head and nodded. "Sure." She settled and sipped her
juice as Cyradis continued. "That sounds fair. What facts?"
Cyradis smiled again. "Well, first of course, we have an egg on the
sands. Once she hatches and Impresses, this will give Dolphin Cove
four queens. So as a good Weyrwoman and knowing Panitath's
possessiveness of the bronzes, four queens here is a bit overcrowded.
Second Dragonsfall, where K'ale lives, only has two queens." She
smiled and tapped her finger against her lips. "I wonder what you
would recommend as a course of action to resolve this imbalance?"
Lanniya spoke her thoughts as she considered the problem. "Well, the
new queen won't be able to move for a while and that will make four of
us." Her brow knit. "Even Anaeryth wouldn't like that many. You could
ask Kapera to transfer but..." She shook her head. "No, because if
anything happened to you, then I'm really not ready to be a Weyrwoman
and whoever Impresses couldn't do it that quickly." Her voice trailed
off as she met Cyradis' eyes and she looked unhappy for a moment.
"That just leaves me. I'll have to transfer."
"To Dragonsfall... where K'ale lives." She stretched the words out
with a twinkle in her eye.
That made her feel a little better and she was familiar with it from
her visits with K'ale, but to live there..."True. I just always
assumed he'd come here." Her brow furrowed. "I mean, it's the third
Weyr I've been too and I'm kind of tired of moving." She rubbed at her
nose a bit. "It's not me, is it? I mean, I've been doing better,
right?"
Cyradis acknowledged her point. "It is usual for the weyrmate to
follow or come to the more senior rider. But in this case it just
worked out this way. I know it gets rough at times when you have to
move." But then she took a breath and her dark eyes softened. "Kapera
and I agree, you've done a wonderful job here Lanniya and if it
weren't that Saibra is short staffed and your weyrmate was there, I'd
keep you here indefinitely. "
That made a bit of tension drain from her and finally, Lanniya nodded.
"Thank you." She chewed on her lower lip. "What if Saibra doesn't like
me?" **What if she's like Rhosyn?** The silent thought echoed through
her head. She _liked_ Dolphin's Cove. And she'd just gotten her sister
back, too. And she'd have to leave her. "And when do I have to go? I
can still visit, right? Pierka's here."
"Of course you can visit dear," Cyradis chuckled. "Don't worry about
Saibra. She used to be my second here before Kapera. I think you'll
like her."
There was a visible look of relief on her face. " Good." She nodded.
"Good." She exhaled and nodded. "I guess I should tell K'ale not to
put in a request for a transfer then." Lanniya looked up at Cyradis.
"I'll miss you guys, though. I really will. You've taught me so much."
"Probably," she smiled. "I will certainly miss you Lanniya. You and
K'ale are welcome here anytime you wish to visit." She knew she didn't
have to tell the younger rider to keep studying. Lanniya was a hard
worker by nature. Her gold had chosen well.
Lanniya rose and immediately moved to give Cyradis a warm hug. "Thank
you. Thank you for everything."
"Of course," she smiled and hugged her back with just as much feeling.
"You are very welcome."
