Kapera

Who: Riveenata, Kapera
Where: DCW
When: m2d13
What: Kapera interrupts Riveenata's watch to check on the greenrider.
Mentioned: Olwinna
Notes: Part 1 of 3

Dusk had fallen on Dolphin Cove, but Kapera's day wasn't over yet. She'd
finished everything for the wing except for reading over the last few
sweep reports that had come in. She was debating if she wanted to go get
a cup of tea and then come back to her office, or if she wanted to take
them up to her weyr and remember to file them in the morning, when she
stumbled across a note she'd written to herself.

It reminded her she wanted to go check on Riveenata, the greenrider
she'd ordered off duty after the Threadfall accident last sevenday.
She'd gotten the physical all-clear from the Healers, and she had been
reading the watch reports from the girl. But she hadn't sat down and
spoken with her since lecturing her, and the goldrider was wondering
exactly how she was doing.

**Riyanth, ask Savith where her rider is and what she is up to please.**

}:Savith, what is your rider doing?":{ the gold asked.

}:We are at the watch tower,:{ Savith responded promptly. }:Should we
not be? Are we in trouble?:{ she asked, remembering that her rider was
very sensitive about not being where she was supposed to be, especially
now that her rider is in trouble. If Riyanth wanted to know where they
were, that maybe meant something was wrong and that meant her rider
might be sad soon, and the green didn't like that idea.

}:They are at the watch,:{ she reported back to her own rider. }:Do I
tell them we will stop by?:{

**Yes,** Kapera answered. She scooped up the sweep reports and began to
head to the watch.

}:You are not in trouble. It is that my rider wants to stop by and
visit,:{ the gold replied to Savith.

Riveenata was sprawled in a chair, waiting to note down anyone who came
to visit. She was bored because her assigned watch had begun at dusk and
there had only been two dragons arriving since then. She jerked in
surprise when Savith brushed against her mind. }:Riyanth's rider is
coming up,:{ the green warned.

**Shards,** she thought, shifting her position so that she was appearing
alert and studious for when the goldrider arrived.

While she waited, she worried, wondering what Kapera could want with
her. To lecture her again about how she wasn't living up to her
potential? She didn't think that her sessions with Olwinna had been
going well enough that the goldrider was going to relieve her of her
punishment early. She also didn't think she was doing anything terrible
in her watch shifts, which was all she was being allowed to do – she'd
noted down all the arrivals

Kapera knocked on the door and walked in. "Riveenata. How are you and
Savith?" she asked.

"Fine, thank you, Weyrwoman," the greenrider answered. "Is there
something we can do for you?"

"I wanted to sit down and check in with you. Do you mind?"

A request like that coming from her wingsecond wasn't really a request
Riveenata could deny, so the greenrider nodded mutely. She breathed in
through her nose, trying to suppress her anxiety from rising before she
knew exactly what the goldrider wanted from her.

Kapera sat down in another chair, crossing her legs, and smiled at the
greenrider. "How have your sessions with the mindhealers been going? I
saw your physical was fine."

"Yes ma'am," Riveenata agreed. "They've been...going well, I guess?
Olwinna is easy to work with and she's good at framing things in a way
that helps me grapple with them," she said, not sure how much detail the
goldrider wanted from her – or how much she wanted to have to give,
honestly.

"That's good that you're working well with her. Fitting well with a
mindhealer is an important step in actually benefiting from them. I
mean, you probably know that from your own Healer training, but I found
it out the harder way when I had to work with one," Kapera said
casually, hoping the greenrider would take the bait she was dangling.

Riveenata had a feeling it was phrased to get her attention, but talking
to Kapera had to be better than sitting here alone with Savith, at
least, as long as she wasn't prying too much. So she said, "Have you
been to one before?"

"When I went back to Windswept Islands from Dragonsfall, I had to see
one. The Weyrwoman was very insistant that I have frequent appointments.
She said it was concern that I was fit to handle duties after what had
happened, but I can't help but wonder if she wasn't actually hoping for
a positive result."

"Why would she feel like that?" Riveenata asked. Hoping for another
goldrider to be having mental problems seemed like a negative thing for
that Weyrwoman to do. It hinted at something going on behind the scenes,
and that interested her.

"How much do you know about my history?" Kapera asked the greenrider.

Riveenata thought about that for a moment. "You're the Weyrwoman's
Second," was the obvious answer, since that's how she had met the
goldrider. Based on what she'd just said... "You were at Windswept
Islands before you were here."

Those were both obvious. She couldn't shake the feeling she was missing
something else. That she'd known Kapera's name for some other reason.
She scrunched her nose, thinking about it.

"And before I was there, I was Weyrwoman at Dragonsfall for a Turn,"
Kapera said. One of her feet began to twitch a bit. "Before I had to
step down. And the fact that I had to step down is why, when I returned
to Windswept Islands, the Weyrwoman there wanted to see me go to a
mindhealer."

Riveenata's eyes widened. She felt like she should have known that fact.
Now she was really curious about what the goldrider was going to have to
say. Most Weyrwomen stepped down because their golds became too old to
rise, like Tsaera had - or their golds became too sick to rise, like
with Zharesti - or they died, like with Lenala.

But Kapera was here in front of her, not that much older than her. And
with a dragon who was capable of Rising, because she knew Riyanth had
had a clutch here at Dolphin Cove. So what must have happened to have a
young Weyrwoman step down from her position? It must have been something
big. She leaned forward, putting her elbows on the table, intent on
knowing what came next.
